Summary
Dwarves are sturdy as stone, unmovable even by a rushing river current. Hobbits, however, are soft and light like moss, and quite easily moved by water unless they have a stone to cling to. The dwarves don't seem to remember this when they choose to cross a river on foot and don't take Bilbo's concerns seriously. The decision leads to Bilbo's life being in danger and both Dwalin and Thorin (and many of the other dwarves) feeling responsible.

Following Gwyndolin's death, they are brought into the Lands Between by Rennala's amber egg. This event shakes Rennala from her stupor, and also sets in motion various shifts in the dynamics of the Lands Between. Pre-Shattering.

But of course, he wanted to keep the one who created him safe, even if Kinger didn’t remember most of the time.
