    His voice cracks right down the middle, like a splinter of lightning across a darkened sky.

    “Ponyboy, I watched Mom and Dad die, then Johnny and Dally. I can’t watch you die too. I know I’m hard on you, I know sometimes I get mad and I shout and I struggle, but I love you. I’m just so scared.”

    Based on a scene in the musical where Cherry returns Johnny’s clothes to Ponyboy and he just sits with his knees to his chin, clutching the bundle of clothes to his chest and refusing to speak. It was so poignant, such a moment of raw and real grief.
