Still on Inventory (standalone fics) by DoomNightAt12, Kitsunebaba, molecular_machine
Fandom The Murderbot Diaries - Martha Wells
17 Oct 2025
Summary
A series of unrelated fics in which a SecUnit (usually Murderbot) is on company inventory and dealing with its governor module, or hiding its hack of its governor module.
The fics are arranged semi-chronologically relative to Murderbot's timeline, but they can be read independently and in any order. All are a balance of angst with hope, except for everything, this, me especially which is more of a mix of fluff, angst and humor.
Stories by molecular_machine, with art and podfic by DoomNightAt12 and Kitsunebaba in The Junkyard Society of Discarded Robots.

“I’m sorry, did you say eleven years old?” Ratthi asked, because humans can’t play back bits of conversations that they didn’t hear and are always asking each other to repeat things, much to the annoyance of any contracted SecUnits being forced to listen in and record everything they say to be sold for advertising data.
“Yes,” Gurathin confirmed, and then everyone was staring at me and looking all shocked and sad and whatever.
“Constructs don’t age the same way humans do,” I reminded them, before anyone could start thinking anything stupid like oh no, Murderbot is just a little kid and little kids shouldn’t be doing security and eleven year olds shouldn’t have guns in their arms. "Eleven is old for a SecUnit. Most of my inorganics are already past warranty.”
Except, because I’m an idiot, that didn’t make it better. It actually made it worse, because now even Dr. Mensah was making a concerned face at me.Bookmarked by DandelionCalifornia

Summary
Kukri kept sending me media about “Robbing the Hood” and telling me to watch it, that I’d understand what was going on better if I did, but I had no interest in watching people rob Hoods, whatever those were. I didn’t like robbing in real life (I did it because I had to not because I wanted to) and I doubted I’d like it in media.
Shortly after hacking its governor module, a rogue SecUnit is involved in an ill-fated space battle and finds itself alone save for the company of a mourning raider ship bot pilot. It would like to spend the rest of its life watching media in what remains of the ship's crew quarters, but it turns out that "the rest of its life" wouldn't be long at all without the money to pay for proper maintenance. There seems to be only one way to get that money.

Notes:I do not own anything to do with Murderbot. I just love it and want to play in this universe a bit.
Please do not repost this work. If you feed this story to AI, not only are you stealing my work, but you're teaching your AI to be an anti-capitalist space pirate. Is that really a good idea do you think?
I've not seen the show, so this will draw only from book canon.
Nobody betas this but me. I do two editing passes and after that any mistakes that survive are allowed to live (unless they are egregious or confuse the meaning of something important). Additional character tags will be added as additional characters wander on screen.

Notes:This story was the second version. The first version was actually these events from SecUnit's perspective. It was slightly different, and the direction both went, I'd say they're different genres. I'll probably finish that one at some point. But, here's this one.

–Murderbot, Fugitive TelemetryThank you very much to SeeMaree for the excellent beta work and help with brainstorming this whirlwind of a fic!
Some chapters will contain content warnings in their opening author's notes, so please keep an eye out for those.
I hope you enjoy.
