“So,” Mom says one weekend afternoon as she and Robin stare down the Sunday Times crossword, huddled together on the porch swing, “you and Steve Harrington sure have been living in each other’s pockets lately.” She puts down the pen and gives Robin a carefully-probing smile disguised as a teasing one. “Anything you wanna tell me?”

Yeah; I’m gay, Robin thinks. Her throat constricts painfully. “I—you’d know if I were dating someone,” she says instead.

“Hey Steve…” Dustin began, looking over at him as he fumbled for the words Steve had been dreading for the past month.

“You never told me what happened after me and Erica went through the vent.”

“Oh.” Steve said, quietly and refusing to look at the kid, focused heavily on slicing the tomatoes. Just keep moving. Don’t pause. Don’t think. “Yeah, guess I didn’t huh?”

“Damn, what happened to you, Harrington?” Eddie asked, squatting down to get a closer look at the blossoming bruises and muddy, dried blood.
“Fire,” was all that Harrington said.
“Fire?” Eddie. “You were in the mall fire?”
Harrington nodded before wincing and closing his eyes against the pain the movement seemed to have caused.
“You’re a bit of a mess, y’know?” Eddie asked. “Did you get checked out?”
“No,” Harrington sighed, closing his eyes again.

“What, you don’t have shit for first aid at home?” And even though Eddie’s lilting voice was sort of joking, he looked straight through Steve in a way that made Steve suddenly certain that Eddie was not going to let this go.

Steve let out a broken laugh and rested his head back against the car door, closing his eyes again instead of imagining what it might be like to live in a house that wasn’t completely haunted. He considered just blowing it off and ignoring Eddie, but he was already trying to ignore the methodic dripping from one of the cuts on his chest that had split open earlier. It wouldn’t stop sticking everywhere and it felt like a goddamn nightmare on top of the dried blood that wouldn’t stop flaking off his skin.

“No way, Munson. Not a chance in hell.”
