Three knocks was what it took for the door of the apartment to slowly creak open. It was nearly three hours past new years. Derek hadn’t had much hope in his heart for anybody to come to the door, but here he was.
“Huh … who is it?” The voice from the other side of the door was trembling and shaky. It sounded like someone who was on the brink of breaking down. And it was Avery. Derek knew. It made his heart twist and turn into knots.
