Simon was always one to notice the smaller details. The scent of Ryland, mixed with his usual vanilla body wash. the slight pudge of his stomach that enveloped his hand, almost begging for the fingers to be closer. Even the natural posture of the other held against him, and none of this was right.

How does he explain all of this to his partner, Grace? Grace, who when Simon made an offhanded reference to the concept of secondary genders during their first year together, seemed completely puzzled by the idea. That was already an awkward conversation, even with Simon purposefully avoiding the topic of heats and ruts! How exactly was that follow-up conversation supposed to go? “Hey, remember when we found out that despite our shared humanity, we have vastly different biologies? Well there’s something I neglected to mention and it’s going to be your problem very soon!”
It turns out, yes, that conversation goes almost exactly like that.
Or: To his surprise, Simon gets his heat, and Grace has to get really cool about a lot of things really quickly.

“He’s probably the most stubborn and petty person I’ve ever met.”
“Don’t you teach middle schoolers?”
“Yep!” Ryland was surprised Simon remembered that. “He’s worse.”
“Ouch.” Simon laughed and Ryland had to look down at his feet to make sure he didn't do something stupid like trip over his own shoelaces. Again. It was unfair how pretty Simon’s laugh was. “I think that might be the harshest thing I’ve ever heard you say.”
“Oh, there’s more where that came from.” Ryland spoke before his brain kicked back into gear. Fudgcicles. Him and his big mouth.
Simon swung around to stop Ryland in his tracks, looking up at him through dark eyelashes and the beginnings of a smile twisting his lips. He was so close, Ryland would swear he could feel Simon’s breath against his lips. “You promise?”

Colt finally got Ryland a job on set and it's been a lot of fun! He might get a little distracted by a certain stuntman sometimes, but that's fine. Simon is a good friend. On the other hand, Tom Ryder is a nuisance.Bookmarked by InsecureMice
