Max Jagerman stood over him, grinning as he lay on the pavement outside Pasqualli’s. The ground was hard and cold beneath him, and a damp chill had spread across his shoulder. Max was a blurry shape overhead. Pete blinked, trying to clear his vision. His glasses were gone, knocked off somewhere in the fall. He coughed, his breathing shallow, pain radiating across his stomach. Max came closer, moving slowly, too slowly. Was he actually walking like that, or had he hit his head too hard? Everything had changed so quickly.
