Malleus does laugh this time. There is no joy whatsoever in its sound, just raw and heartbroken. “Am I?”
Kingscholar hates him. It ensured Malleus would never forget this small fact. And Malleus, foolishly, couldn’t stop thinking, hoping, praying that, maybe, things would change one day.
Could he truly be safe with a beast like this?
A long, callused finger touches Malleus’s chin. He watches that blood-stained finger, enraptured by the stark contrast. Somehow, for reasons Malleus cannot begin to comprehend, all he can think about is that Kingscholar would look beautiful covered in his blood.
And then Kingscholar licks its finger. And again, as if that first taste was not enough to fully appreciate it. Its eyes meet Malleus’s. He trembles under the intensity of its gaze.
“As safe as you can be.”
After an incident during alchemy class, Malleus and Leona find themselves with a complicated situation. The journey to solve their problems will change everything.

Summary
It's also a testament to Leona's kindness that, instead of dropping his two co-workers at the airport, he actually spends real human pounds on parking so he can accompany them and their exorbitant amount of luggage to their terminal. Ruggie's headed back home to Mwanza and seems to have packed gifts for the entire population of children there. Jack's more conservative two-piece luggage fits enough winter clothing to go traipsing with his boyfriend's family in some Disneyish Finnish winter wonderland.
A testament to his kindness. Or his loneliness, maybe. As he lets the two travellers hug him goodbye at the final gate, there arises an begrudging acknowledgement that happiness-wise, he's in beggar territory, and can little else than scrounge up the scraps of second-hand joy exuding off of Ruggie and Jack. Everything about the holiday season is awful, including the songs.

Leona, two years out from his post-grad and fresh into this winter's round of seasonal depression, runs into a classmate from his Oxford philosophy class who is, unfortunately, really fucking hard to forget.
