“The Red Hood has been good for Gotham,” Robin continued. “Crime in Park Row decreased by sixty one percent almost as soon as you showed up, and that’s even taking into account all the crime you commit. Drug overdoses have decreased by twenty two percent in adults and seventy nine percent in minors. Homeless minors are ninety two percent less likely to—”

“Kid,” Jason interrupted. “Enough statistics. What the hell is this about?”

Robin slowly lowered the tablet with his powerpoint presentation and looked up at Red Hood.

“You care about Gotham,” Robin summarised. “Gotham needs Batman. Batman is missing and so is Nightwing. We need you to fill in for Batman.”

“You want me to cover Batman’s patrols?” Jason clarified.

“No,” Robin said. “I want you to be Batman.”

    Jason bluescreened.

(Or: Batman and Nightwing mysteriously disappear before Red Hood has even started antagonising them, Robin is desperate, Gotham needs Batman, and Red Hood is Batman-Shaped.)

Wherein B and N get kidnapped by aliens, so Robin III gets Red Hood to substitute.

    “Gotham needs Batman,” Robin said.

“Sure, kid,” he grunted, appreciating that the sarcasm came through despite his voice modulator.

    “No, it’s true,” Robin insisted.

Then the kid dead-ass pulled out a tablet from behind his back to show Red Hood the screen. It was a powerpoint. The kid, honest to God, was showing him a powerpoint.

“The crime statistics are clear,” Robin said as he showed Red Hood a series of graphs. “Organised crime went down thirty percent after the appearance of Batman. Violent crime went down ten percent, even after you factor in the rogues. Unsolved crime went down forty percent. Every time Batman is absent for more than a month, violent and petty crime increases by two percent for every month he’s gone.”

Jason was amused, despite himself, but all he could really bring himself to say was, “What the fuck?”

The kid valiantly carried on with his presentation. “Gotham needs Robin too. Without Robin, Batman is twenty eight percent more likely to be injured. Trust in Batman also increased by fifty two percent after the introduction of Robin. When Robin is absent for long stretches of time, the debilitating injuries caused by Batman increase.”

    “O…kay?”

“You want me to cover Batman’s patrols?” Jason clarified.

“No,” Robin said. “I want you to *be* Batman.”

    Jason bluescreened.

“You’re in charge of the money?” Red Hood asks.

    Evander gulps. “Yes, that’s right.”

“You think you could help me out?”

Dread pools in Evander’s gut. “What kind of help?”

    “You any good with spreadsheets?”

It turned out that Hood just needed accounting help.
He had quickly gotten the responsibility of several complex organizations, all with different financial organization systems, properties, workers, and more, and he had no idea what to do with them.

“Don’t people with jobs get benefits and stuff?” he asks one day. “Like… dentists?”
“Dental,” she gently corrects. “Yes, many jobs give benefits. Things like health insurance, paid time off, professional development and education benefits, that sort of thing.”
“Can I do all of them?”
She smiles. “I think we can figure something out.”
He does give his workers those benefits, as well as mental health benefits, paid family leave, as well as retirement plan benefits.
Hood completely changes these people’s lives, going from the shittiest jobs in Gotham to some of the most accessible, most beneficial jobs in the city.
And Hood doesn’t realize the impact he’s making on them. To him, these are things jobs should just have. He doesn’t completely understand why, but he knows that they should.

"Why does Joker, or any of your themed villains, deserve to live but these people don't?"
Batman grits his teeth, ready to be confronted with everyone he failed to save, to rehash those tired arguments about even murderers deserving a fair trial, but it isn't the victims that are thrown in his face.
    At least, not Joker's victims.
    "What is this?"
"You mean Batman doesn't recognize the people he's killed?"

Red Hood, Joker, and Batman meet in a crumbling building. The confrontation goes a bit differently than in canon.

Or: even more cathartic yelling at Bruce.

    A discussion of Batman's kill-count.

Also the bit about Bruce being like “I can’t let Clark know about this” is so good
It demonstrates that Bruce IS that out of touch that while he feels justified in committing murders and then lying to his closest friends about it, he also DOES realize on some level that his behavior would be condemned to hell and back if it ever got out
Which is probably what Jason does next tbh
You know he was dead serious about that threat
Batman knifed ANOTHER one of Jason’s people, time to tattle

I love your interpretation of Bruce's thoughts about Clark. I was picturing it more as Bruce still thinking his behavior could be justified - sure it *looks* bad, but if he can just explain before Clark makes up his mind, it would be fine... Him actively covering it up is even worse, and arguably makes more sense.

I wanted to leave it open whether Jason leaves it at blackmailing Bruce into quitting or if he actually has to release evidence, but yeah, realistically Batman would never give up. Next time Bruce kills a mook but lets Crane get away with gassing the city, his reputation is gonna get taaaaanked

Or maybe, and this one’s my favorite, they ALREADY KNOW
They are already aware that their actions can and do result in the deaths of their opponents
They don’t go out intending to kill people, but sometimes the wounds they inflict do result in death
If this is the case, do they subscribe to the “I won’t (intentionally) kill you but I don’t have to save you” philosophy?
Do they disagree with Jason’s methods because they believe that he does it too often or that he shouldn’t be intentionally killing people?

Do they even disagree with what Jason’s been doing?
If they accept it from themselves because they are beneficial to Gotham, isn’t there a chance that they also would accept it from Jason because he’s benefitting Crime Alley?
Do they resent Bruce they know that they kill and have to hide it from him despite his killing because he’s a rampaging hypocrite and they don’t want to deal with that? On that note, do they watch this cowl footage later and react exactly like I did because it’s about time someone ripped Bruce a new one for this?

In my view, this fic also implies that while the Batkids do kill, Bruce is by far the biggest offender
I know Jason’s targeting Bruce at least in part because he’s “in charge” of Gotham and its vigilantes
But to be so harsh on Bruce and deliberately leave the others alone (for now at least) is a very fun tidbit to think about and why I think the Batsibs may have a fate other than Bruce and his Bruce-ness

Clones take great pride in their names. It's only natural that Cody would want to know about his General's.

Cody grinned, burying his face into Obi-Wan’s neck. “That dorn and trill sound is close in the vode accent.” He kissed at his jaw. “And maybe even closer in yours.”

Obi-Wan frowned. “Why didn’t you ever correct me? I haven’t even spelled it correct-”

“Obi-Wan,” Cody’s eyes were molten gold in the cast light from the meditation candle Obi-Wan had left lit. “It’s… I… the once-removal is… protective.”

    “What do you mean?”

Cody smiled sadly, eyes suddenly heavy. “Well Mandalore isn’t exactly on best terms with the Republic. And Clones…”

Obi-Wan dropped his head. Yes, the attitude towards Clones was atrocious at worst, indifferent at best. “A high-ranking Clone with a Mandalorian name wouldn’t be a good look for the GAR,” he concluded.
