What makes a movie wonderful? Better yet, the best piece of representation of an entire community?
On the other hand, what makes a movie awful? What makes it bring pure shame to the same entire community?
In this comparative essay, I talk about the brilliance of The Handmaiden and the truly offensive piece of media that is Blue Is the Warmest Color using sex as a central theme to discuss how the first one portrays deep respect and affection through it and how the second one portrays the lack thereof. That is to say that the two movies are polar opposites in literally every sense of the word.

Glinda was still trying to hold Elphaba tighter. And tighter. And tighter. She felt this inexplicable anxiety in regards to Elphaba escaping through her fingers like warm sand. Vaporizing. Like she used to do in her dreams whenever Glinda reached out to touch her. In those recurrent dreams, Glinda had learned to keep her distance from Elphaba. That way, she didn’t vaporize. That way, Glinda was able to enjoy the sight of her for many seconds. The blonde actually thought about keeping her distance just now, because Elphaba very much could vaporize again. She was good at it. But, before Glinda could tell her own body not to, she was already closing her eyes and taking the leap. And it was so worth the risk!

It’s taken me the longest time to even write your name because it hurts too much! But I miss talking to you and telling you things and I thought, well, that I’d write to you even though you’ll never get these letters. It’s a bit silly maybe, but I lost my dearest darlingest bestest friend and life has hardly been the same for me anymore. So I thought this might make my heart a bit lighter.
Chistery has been looking after me. And oh, Elphie, he’s speaking full sentences already! I wish you were here to see it. Or well, hear it! He takes some time to get the words out but I still count it as a win. I feel he might be worried I might jump off my balcony or something whenever I look to the western sky and think about you! But can you blame me? Those moments are when I give myself permission to cry and really remember you in peace. ♡

Elphaba gets up from the sofa, a little relieved that it seems she’s found her artist.
