    Summary

During a game of cards, an older man spoke of his grandmother who’d seen a man that’d looked like a shooting star running through her fields of wheat and saltgrass, only to vanish at the town’s eastern border. From what she’d seen of him, he’d looked too sad to make a wish on, and she hadn’t much liked the idea of wishing on a dead man in the first place.

The story hadn’t been much of anything. It certainly didn’t tie to the lake in any concrete way, and it didn’t mention July, and it didn’t have the tension that every other rumor did.

But Nicholas finds himself in some stranger’s grandmother’s hometown north of July anyway, a couple hours’ ride up a highway that looked to be maintained only by the grace of God and hand-mixed pitch. It’s bigger than July, but that isn’t saying much. Its defining feature is a bar that markets itself as a Real Western Saloon, complete with swinging doors and a dusty piano that plays two hairs offkey to keep the tunes jaunty. What’d once been those saltgrass and wheat fields sport maize these days, and they stretch for yarz down the highway.

When he breathes in, he can taste lakesand against his tongue. He presses it to the roof of his mouth as a reminder, as an omen.

    Summary

His memories trickle in, he tries to remember what he was last doing. There was Hopeland, and there was red. A lot of red.

    Vash.

There’s an uncomfortable feeling in his chest at the name, the face. Spikey, Needle-noggin, Blondie, all his stupid nicknames for one very familiar face.

He died, the knowledge doesn’t feel as scary as it should be. Just strange, like the first time he saw Vash talk to a plant. Like something beyond his comprehension was placed right in his lap.

Wolfwood wakes up almost twenty years after his death. Things have changed, the world is a kinder place than he left it. There's only one thing missing.

    Where is Vash the Stampede?

    Summary

Picks up where Stargaze left off.
On the day Vash departs Noman’s Land, he makes one final stop at the lake created in July’s crater by Nai’s last run. He intends to say goodbye to his brother and make a vow to protect their sisters.
Instead, Vash and Wolfwood find Nai - naked, fully restored, hair now long and black - collapsed at the water’s edge.
In the months that follow, the twins dance around each other as they work to repair their relationship, find out what it means to be brothers again, and maybe build something more.
Nai just didn’t expect the Punisher to be so involved.

“Hey,” Livio began, “were you in love with Vash?”

“𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵—” Wolfwood hacked loudly, sputtering and coughing as he yanked his cigarette out and stared wide-eyed, spooked like a thoma. “Who the 𝘧𝘶𝘤𝘬 starts a conversation like that?"

    - - -

Five years after Wolfwood's death, he crawls back out of his own grave. Somehow, tracking down Vash to give him the news becomes the most difficult part in all this.

    “What’s your name?”

    “…Knives.”

Vash’s mouth ticks downward. “Is that the name the… doctors gave you?” Knives nods. He listens to the thrum in Vash’s chest in the brief silence that lapses.

“Can I call you something else?” After a beat, another nod. “How’s Nai sound?”

    “Short,” Knives says.
