    Summary

When Giyuu was four, his mother took him and his sister to see the ocean for the first time.

It’s only six months before her death, six months before he and Tsutako became orphans, and if Giyuu is honest, his memories of that day have long since faded. He knows they took a train, knows Tsutako was the first to rush into the water still warm from summer’s fading light. He knows he was more reluctant, that he held his mother’s hand while he watched the waves crash upon the shore.

“Are you afraid?” she asked, her frail fingers carefully intertwined with his own. Giyuu shook his head. “No? I didn’t think so. Do you not want to swim then?” He shook his head.

“I want to stay with you,” he said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Together they walked across the beach, the ocean eagerly nipping at their feet. Eventually Giyuu will swim, eventually the water will take him as her own. But not today.

Today he was his mother’s son.

    Summary

Title from Dead bird by McCafferty

Maria Phelps left her family. She abandoned her son Travis and her husband Kenneth to live the life she wanted. Or had she? That question had always plagued the back of her son's mind. The letter she'd left had seemed sterile and fake, not like the warmth he'd known his mother to possess. But he had to believe that she'd left him, what other option was there?

He wore her sweater almost daily, he wore her cross around his neck. He'd keep believing his mother had left him to suffer in a home with no love or warmth, to die of hypothermia as his father's cold glare raised him to be a perfect little copy.

    - Or -

Travis's mother had left him when he was young, but the details of how she'd gone were always fuzzy. In a whirlwind of bad luck and annoying stoners, Travis will find out what actually happened to Maria Selah Phelps, whether he wants to or not.

    Summary

Nockfell was a pathetic little rural town founded in 1623 located near Wendigo Lake. The town mostly housed old people, who apparently enjoyed nothing ever happening around here, and those that had the incredible misfortune of being born here. Travis fell in the second category.
As long as he can remember, his days have always been rather monotone and repetitive. Day in, day out - apart from the seasons, nothing much ever changed in Nockfell.
Which is why Travis was convinced that the only people that would voluntarily move to Nockfell either were heartlessly dragged here by their family, or clinically insane.
Judging from the jagged blue ponytails, the mismatched clothes and the freaky fucking mask that stared back blankly at the class, this new kid was the latter.

    _

What starts out as tutoring lessons with Sally Face quickly turns into what Travis would refuse to call friendship. But with his fathers high expectations of him and the growing responsibility he has with the church it becomes harder and harder to juggle everything at once.
Especially when the friendship starts to develop into something that Travis is not ready to face yet.

    Summary

“We need allies,” Sasori says suddenly, always one to get directly to the point. Deidara's face morphs from a pout to one of surprise. There has never been talks of allies before. The child has always just assumed it would be the two of them alone in this crusade. And Sasori had thought that too; until a few hours ago.

“Danna how would we even get allies? We're not exactly people others would trust easily.” The child doesn't even ask why, simply taking Sasori’s directive as enough on their own.

“No we are not. Hence why we will have to play the long game. We will have to manufacture trust. Manipulate whoever we need to, tell them whatever it is they need or want to hear. Make them blindly and fiercely dependent, devoted to us and only us.”
Aka: Itachi learns to be a bit selfish, Deidara learns to wield soft power and Sasori learns to be a bit more human.
Or: Sasori thinks he's manipulating Deidara. Deidara thinks he's manipulating Itachi. Itachi thinks he's above getting manipulated. And somehow the only ones they've managed to manipulate is themselves into becoming the good guys (and somewhat decent people).
