We have to remember that the Baudelaire children did not live normal lives, even before Count Olaf had destroyed any hope of them ever finding out what “normal” might have meant. Their parents, who seemed to have so many friends and colleagues, were always away at some party or event, while the children had only each other to keep them company. So when Olaf starts asking for Violet’s opinion, holding it in higher esteem than even that of his henchmen, Violet begins to feel the type of feelings that neglected and scared children usually can’t name, but are governed by nonetheless.
