Summary
"Can I help with anything?"
The question comes out more as a desperate plea than a helpful offer, at least to Samuel's finely tuned ears. Henry sits at the table, looking too large for the seat he'd chosen, one leg bouncing to escape his idleness.
"You're a guest here, Henry," Mame answers. "Guests do not lift a finger, unless it is for eating."
A simple lesson in baking challah helps Samuel learn more about his brother, about his mother, and about himself.

Summary
In Sir Radzig’s camp, the day finally loosens its grip and the fire burns low enough for everyone to admit they’re tired. Henry tries to stay upright out of pride, but exhaustion wins, and he drifts off with his head on Radzig’s shoulder. Radzig says nothing, simply steadies him, covers him with a cloak, and keeps watch until morning, letting Henry have one quiet night where he doesn’t have to be strong.

Summary
On a sweltering day in Rattay, Henry crumples with a summer fever and wakes to cool cloths, bitter willow tea, Bernard’s gruff fussing, and Sir Radzig’s quiet, steady watch. Through the long afternoon and softer night, small mercies—water, broth, an apple, a notched coin—see him through until dawn breaks the fever and the yard returns to ordinary life.
