Sir Radzig forbids him to go back to Skalitz to bury his parents. So Henry, with a burning sense of betrayal in his chest and his father's sword in his hand, walks away from his lord. On his way to vengeance, he embraces a life of violence under the stern leadership of an outlaw called Jan Žižka. When they capture a young nobleman near a pond, it sets in motion events that will make Henry’s loyalties shake, and his heart remember there are things beyond revenge.

Summary
In Sir Radzig’s camp, the day finally loosens its grip and the fire burns low enough for everyone to admit they’re tired. Henry tries to stay upright out of pride, but exhaustion wins, and he drifts off with his head on Radzig’s shoulder. Radzig says nothing, simply steadies him, covers him with a cloak, and keeps watch until morning, letting Henry have one quiet night where he doesn’t have to be strong.

He struggled to keep the liquids rising up his esophagus down. It wasn’t the gore that had him gagging, nor the horror of taking another human life that creeped in once the thrill of the hunt started to wear off. It wasn’t the promise of damnation from the preachers and the scriptures, but the way the man had stared at him. Had Henry looked into the eyes of a man whose life he’d taken before? Even with Runt, satisfied as he’d been to take the whoreson’s life, he’d kicked his corpse over and straight down to look at the floorboards of the burning attic. He would rummage through the pockets of bandits and Cumans for spare change to buy beers and scraps of hare, but never look at their faces.

Henry doesn’t belong here even more now than when he stood here the first time, a blacksmith boy in his tattered clothes, with his sloppy bows and the words that tripped over one another on the way out of his mouth.
Before each night he prays to see the good. The warm gentle memories that he made in the narrow crevices between the sorrow and despair. Of his mother’s kind smile, and his father's approving gaze. Of the first time he kissed a girl, all jittery nerves and excitement. Of the last time he kissed a boy, consumed with the feeling of love, and how he counted the golden specks in his blues eyes as they lay in each other’s embrace only hours before Henry’s first death.
He shouldn’t pray for the last. He should burn for this sin. But instead he keeps living on only to die again.

Summary
It should be said before anything else that Radzig never regretted Henry's birth. He just wishes that he could have gotten him under better circumstances. He wishes that Henry had not been saddled with being a cursed bastard. That he is not seen as other or a monster by most people.
Radzig might not have been able to claim Henry as his, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't watching as Henry grew up. Life can be cruel, but that doesn't mean that there wasn’t still a lot of joy. He got to watch as Henry went from shy colt, to mischievous child, and all the way to young man, and one of the finest warriors he has ever met.
Much has happened since Skalitz burned. The task before them is a perfect chance to get to know his son. It’s time to return to Skalitz. See if there is something to be done to right the world again.
