Ziyuan, who’s been busy removing her pearl earrings, goes still. She looks at him through the reflection of her vanity mirror. “Trouble? Our A-Cheng?” The unspoken ‘how absurd’ tacked on to the end is as clear as day. Still, she asks, “What do you mean?”
Ah, how can he put this delicately without sounding preposterous? “By trouble I mean in the form of attention.” A pause. “Lots of attention. Possibly in the form of, uh, seasoned gentlemen.”
Yu Ziyuan turns around and gives him a long, quiet stare. “Fengmian,” she enunciates slowly, carefully, “are you telling me that our son is a magnet for perverted old men?”
