Luz glanced at her phone's clock again.
Amity was three minutes late.
No, this wouldn't have been a concern for Luz had she been waiting on Eda or Willow or Gus or anyone else. They were just running late, that was all. But Amity was never late. Amity was either early or precisely on time without a second’s delay.
Luz grew increasingly worried as the seconds continued to tick by. What if there was some terrifying Boiling Isles monster that had caught Amity alone and injured on the path? What if she'd fallen down and lost her crutches and now she couldn't walk? What if she had hurt herself further? What if she was scared and alone and Luz had no way of knowing?
Luz took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She was getting worked up over nothing, she was sure. Amity was just late. Maybe she had forgotten to account for her crutches, which would lead to a slower pace. Maybe she'd walk through that door any second now. After all, even if she's always on time, down to the second, punctual to a fault, she wasn't perfect. She wasn't infallible. Maybe she was just late.OR:
