Joel set another tree ablaze and stepped back, watching it burn. The flames roared, a living thing now, snarling up toward the sky.
Him and Etho… they were like fire.
Passionate. All-consuming. But quick to be put out.
Maybe that’s just how it was meant to be.
He turned to leave, but paused. Just for a second. Smoke curled around him, catching in his clothes, his hair. He imagined what Etho would say if he saw him now. Probably some joke. Probably a warning.Joel let himself smile.
Then he walked into the woods, leaving the ashes behind.
