Summary
“You know, they’re gonna be really mad if we don’t make out anytime soon,” Kokichi says, flipping through the pages of a magazine, his own face smiling at him from the cover almost flirtatiously.
The weight of his words hits him all at once, unexpectedly. The knife slips in his hand and pierces through the skin of his index finger, sending a flash of pain through its length.
”Shit!" he cries out, lifting his hand to his mouth and sucking on his finger, letting the metallic taste of blood spill on his tongue.
Kokichi smiles at him from the couch, a sharp grin that doesn't reach his eyes.

Summary
She’s a person of principle. And Kokichi can relate to that, in a way, because there are some things that he will simply never allow himself to do, but Akamatsu is so very loud about it, and that’s part of what makes her weak. Because people are rarely so loud unless it comes from a place of insecurity.
(Plus, he’d have to be stupid to miss out on the desperation in her encouraging smiles, the way her lips twitch when she’s questioned, the way she hesitates before spouting whatever optimistic nonsense she’s trying to sell to everyone else, the way that she always trails off once everyone is convinced, looking as though she’s not sure herself… she’s a liar, that’s what she is, and being a liar makes you weak. Kokichi decides that as soon as he meets her.)

Summary
He takes a moment to really size Kuzuryuu up—putting aside his own assumptions and focusing on what his gut is telling him about this guy. Short-tempered, intimidating, but really not so bad after a few minutes of conversation. Sincere, too. That’s a good quality, and his classmates will like that about him once they give him a chance. Maybe Kaito’s problem is the same as everyone else’s: Kuzuryuu’s exterior is just too scary for anyone to try and get past.
Then, there’s only one thing to do about it.
“I got an idea,” Kaito decides, and closes the distance, clapping Kuzuryuu’s shoulder. “Ordinarily I’d take you on as my sidekick, but I think what you need’s a little different. I’m talking a full overhaul. We’re gonna build you up from the ground up, Kuzuryuu!”
“Eh?” Kuzuryuu visibly falters at the hand on his shoulder, looking between it and Kaito’s face. “I—sure, man, whatever you think will work.” His ears flare red. “I’ll follow your lead.”

Summary
Kaito makes a few incoherent questioning sounds, eyes popping open to glare reproachfully at Kokichi, but his gaze seems to catch on something behind him; the room at large, probably. After that, Kaito is awake quickly, scrambling to his own knees as his head swivels back and forth, taking in the general eerie atmosphere of the room they’re in as his mouth opens and closes. A pint of blood seems to drain from his face.
“W-W—”
“We don’t know,” Rantaro says, putting a hand on Kaito’s shoulder. “At least, I don’t think we do.” He glances meaningfully at Kokichi.
“Oh, yeah. My bad. I forgot to mention we were doing an escape room for our date today.” Kokichi shrugs. “Sorry about that!”
Rantaro has the grace to chuckle before he looks back at Kaito. “Both of us just woke up not very long before you. It kind of seems like what you see is what you get in here, though…”

Kaito, Kokichi, and Rantaro wake up in a mysterious building where they have to face a series of challenges to escape to the next room. As members of the group are incapacitated one at a time, each is forced to think outside the box in order to get them and their loved ones out.

“Hi, Amami,” Kaito responds. He sounds a little breathless, almost winded, like he’s been running. It wakes Rantaro up a little. Sweeping his hand through his hair, Rantaro prepares to respond with more concern, but Kaito beats him to the punch: “So uh, I dunno how to put this. We’re dating now.”
Of all the things Rantaro had been revving himself up to hear, that can go in maybe the bottom one thousand. “Excuse me?”
“Yeah, uhh—wait, shit. What time is it over there? Should I call you back?”
Rantaro stares over at the blinking red numbers of the hotel room’s alarm clock, which now read 3:06AM. After a pause to weigh his curiosity and his body’s natural need for sleep, Rantaro eventually responds, “I can last through a short phone call. I think I should be telling you to buy me dinner first, but it sounds as though that’s already happened?”

In the heat of the moment, to get out of rejecting a love confession, Kaito tells Maki that he's gay and dating someone he barely knows: Amami Rantaro. He comes up with a simple plan of action for getting himself out of it... but of course, life is rarely simple.
