Summary
“We got it,” Frank says, his deep voice booming through the room. He slaps the map down on the bar and it echos so loud that some of the others poke their heads in. “We got a way in.”
Karen and Matt exchange a look, and he’s ready to ask how that’s possible. They’ve spent weeks trying and failing to figure out how to covertly breach AVTF ground-zero. But he can feel the energy radiating off Frank as a rare grin stretches wide across his face.
“We’ve got a way in?” Karen asks, shifting toward Frank.
“Goddamn right we do,” he says, locking eyes with her. “This plan’s gonna work."
The plan goes to shit almost immediately.

Summary
“You chose me,” her voice is quiet, almost disbelieving.
“I’m always gonna choose you, Karen,” he says, bracing his hands along the sides of her face and tilting it up toward his. “I’ve actually been thinking about hangin’ it up.”
Karen’s eyes widen. “For good?”
“Look, if Murdock needs my help again, which he will, I won’t say no,” Frank says, dryly. “But I’m done lookin’ for trouble.”
Her eyes search his face, cataloging everything, and he sees the moment she understands that this is for real. Her expression softens, and her gaze shifts from searching to seeing. She’s seeing him, in real time, decide to walk away from the violence and darkness that he's allowed to consume him for years. She’s seeing him choose her, choose them.

“Karen, it’s me,” he says, his voice rough but quiet. “Open up. Please?”
The lock clicks almost immediately, and the door opens. She’s standing there barefoot, in jeans and a worn Columbia crewneck sweatshirt, her blonde hair still damp from the shower and twisted into a loose bun at the top of her head.
Her eyes sweep over him, cataloging every cut and bruise that hadn’t been there the day before. They linger on his face, on his left eye that’s purple and swollen.
“You look like shit,” she says, pushing the door wide and stepping back to let him in. There’s no heat behind the words, just a thread of worry and exhaustion. “Been busy?”
Frank huffs a breath, almost laughing because, that’s the understatement of the fucking century. “Yeah, somethin’ like that.”

“You said you’d be workin’ late on that case, so I figured I’d bring you some fuel,” Frank says with a small shrug, holding up a cardboard carrier with four drinks. “Thought maybe we could go for a walk?”
The warmth in Karen’s chest spreads until she feels a little lightheaded, and she’s unsure if it’s his proximity, that he brought coffee for her friends, too, or the fact that he’s standing there in the middle of the office like it’s the most normal thing in the world. Whatever it is, she wants to put it somewhere safe and keep it forever.
“Well, I was just headed out on a coffee run, so your timing is perfect,” she says, removing their drinks from the carrier then setting the remaining two on Matt’s desk.
She hands Frank his cup — hot coffee, black, and takes a sip from hers. It’s an iced hazelnut latte from her favorite place up the street, and it’s so good that she tips her head back against his chest. He’s gazing down at her with a closed-mouth grin on his face.
“I get it right?” he asks, and his eyebrows raise a little like everything hinges on her answer.
Karen smiles, “You got it right.”

Summary
Karen takes a slow breath, trying to calm her racing heart, and is glad for the distraction when the kitten wakes from her 12th nap of the day, blinking bleary eyes up at Frank. She nudges her tiny head into his free hand like she’s aware his attention isn’t fully on her. He rolls his eyes and scratches behind her ears.
“God forbid I don’t give you all my attention,” he says dryly.
She watches his fingers move, slow and sure, both on the kitten and on her, and her chest aches with something warm. “She needs a name,” she says, finally, nudging his knee with her other foot.
“She’s got one,” Frank says, slipping off her other sock and tossing it to the floor to join the other.
“Little shit is not a name, Frank,” she says with a sigh.
“Eh, it suits her.”
“Ok, well, you’re not wrong,” she says. “But, I’d really rather not have the vet techs calling that out into the waiting room any time I take her in for something.”
Frank laughs, a real laugh, full and rough, and it’s such a rare thing that it catches Karen completely off guard.
“I’d actually pay good money to see that shit,” he says.

His face was a map of new scars and old exhaustion, his eyes hooded and dark. He didn't say her name. He didn't ask if she was okay. He just looked at the yellow-green bloom of the bruise on her jaw, and for a split second, his jaw tightened so hard Karen thought his teeth might shatter.

Summary
Imprisoned in the Red Hook dungeon, Frank realizes the prisoner on the other side of the wall from him is someone important.
Excerpt:
“No,” the man snapped, slightly irritated. “I’m a lawyer. Franklin Nelson.”Frank’s body locked up, like a trigger half-pulled. Time seemed to stand still. He could feel every bead of sweat on his brow, the ache of the bruises on his ribs, the way the cuffs dug in too tight to the flesh of his wrists. Not a single one of his muscles moved. He was pretty sure his heart stopped beating as comprehension washed over him, violent, impossible knowing. His ears were ringing as if he’d just taken a blow to the head, every nerve sparking in disbelief.

He shut his eyes and tears he hadn’t felt gathering ran down his cheeks.
“. . . so do I just call you New Guy, for now?” Nelson prompted, when Frank did not reciprocate sharing his identity. “You don’t have to tell me your life story or anything, just thought we could get acquainted. Since we’re gonna be neighbors for a bit.”
Frank fought through his stunned paralysis and made himself form words.
“Son of a bitch,” he gasped out. “You’re. . . Foggy Nelson.”
