Summary
“I understand,” Harold says, clever fingers and brilliant mind and playing fucking chess with the entire world, and she didn’t ask for this, she didn’t ask for somebody to understand her when half of the time she doesn’t even understand herself.

Bookmarker's Notes
Harold’s voice gives out on him. He swallows, unclenches his hands where he unconsciously balled them into fists. Christ, what is he doing.
John looks like he is going to be sick.
“Please tell me if there is something that you want from me, John,” Harold says, and John flinches at the words.
“What I want I’m not gonna get,” John says hoarsely, hiding his mouth behind his hand as if he’s afraid of giving something away.

Summary
“I really don't think that this is necessary, Mr. Reese,” Harold says. He busies himself with the electronic lock. Surely Rodgers exaggerated the effects of the substance; Harold and John are disciplined, rational men who won't be swayed by some designer party drug.

Bookmarker's Notes
“Don't joke about this,” John says, a warning. His instinct is to run, suddenly; he already locates his clothes from his peripheral vision. His shoes? He can probably do without the jacket. He needs to get out, get some air: this was fine, curling up together until the worst of the chemical storm in their bodies has passed, but John can't get used to this, he can't get too attached to how this feels, because – because –

Summary
And Lucy Gray realizes – she’s not just a songbird in a cage.
She’s a songbird that allowed herself to get caught.
In the end, it comes down to this:
A boy and a girl sitting in the dark, their love hanging like a shadow between them.
“Come with me,” the boy pleads, as if this were a fairy-tale, a happy story, a lullaby. “Come with me.”
Or: Lucy Gray returns to the Capitol with Snow.

Jeff blushes bright red. "You're kinda crazy," he says, which makes Eric laugh.
"Maybe," he says. "So. You wanna grab dinner or something, so I can flirt with you some more?"
"Yes," says Jeff immediately. "I mean," he adds, trying for casual even though he suspects it's way too late for that, "You could probably use the practice."

Summary
The first time Henry sees Alex race, his brain can’t understand what he’s seeing. He’s 14 and Alex is 13, and Alex is smaller than everyone, but so much more confident and brave.
He pushes Philip wide and overtakes on the last lap, pushing the throttle down on his kart to cross the finish line a full second ahead of Philip.
“He’s bloody reckless!” Philip shouts, ripping his helmet off once he’s out of his kart. Like second is unacceptable.
Henry stops watching Alex celebrate.
Philip’s hair looks dumb.
Their dad laughs, dropping an arm around Philip’s shoulder. “He’s not. He just beat you.” He looks over at Alex. Henry looks, too, taking any excuse he can. “We’ll have to watch out for him.”
