Summary
Captain John Watson and the Starship Enterprise are ordered to Janus VI, where a series of mysterious killings have halted production of the vital mineral pergium. But Watson’s orders to get the mining facility up and running aren’t made any simpler by his brilliant new First Officer’s stubborn insistence that the deaths aren’t what they seem — or by the discovery that a hitherto unknown alien species is threatened with destruction. Watson must now risk his new command on the deductions of a regulations-averse Vulcan and the slim chance that if the humans in this situation won’t see sense, maybe the aliens will…

Summary
Dennis watches as the rest of them peel off into the same predictable behaviours as any other night. Mac roping Frank into going with him to The Rainbow, Charlie heading to the back office to stick his head in a can of paint thinner. And Dee, already passed out on one of the barstools with her face squashed against the bar.
Today, a woman that used to work at their old high school library died. Or, not died; it was suicide. She killed herself, at just over 70 years old. Dee had sent Dennis the article earlier, accompanied by a message that read: 'The hag is dead!'
Dennis' first thought was that the hag got off easy. His second, fuelled by mild irritation, that Dee was an idiot for thinking this woman's death would mean anything to him.

Summary
Charlie isn't a proud guy. He'll easily admit that there's a lot of stuff he doesn't understand, a lot of people he doesn’t get. Dennis Reynolds is probably on top of the list.

He's typing before he actively makes the decision to do so.
