Summary
Names are important. Names have power, though what kind of power depends on the kind of name. This much, he knows.
Real Names are the Name your parents give you, the first Name you knew meant you. They’re tied to you before you know how to say them, so much part of you they must be treated with care, kept secret from all but your closest loved ones, for any who know them can exert their power on you for their own ends.
Then there’s the name you choose, the Safety Name, your public name, closer to a mask than a name. It’s attached to the you shown to the world, it functions like a shield, a wall between yourself and any who might attempt to magically influence you.
He thinks he remembers there being more kinds of names than that, but he can’t remember what they are. He just knows— he thinks that they exist.
He knows all of this. What he doesn’t know are his own names. Not anymore.
Not after It found him, and changed him somehow. Everything before It is blurry and indistinct, save for that he knows he wasn't always like this, and that It is why he is.
No, the only Name he knows himself by is the one It gave him, after finding amusement in his well-founded terror of It: Anxiety.

Summary
Janus doesn't have a problem with Remus or Virgil keeping secrets, unless they're hurt in some way. You can call him a hypocrite all you want, sure. But he's not going to let someone else hurt them, not when he can stand in the way just as easily. It's not fun of course, but it's better than the alternative, and Janus has long ago learned to handle it without any problems.
The actual problem comes when Virgil finds out.

Summary
Serpent was a supervillain. Now that doesn’t mean he is evil, of course not, no one is purely good or evil, it’s not humanly possible. But if he had to pick, the evil role does seem more fun, doesn’t it? And certainly more effective.
So he wasn’t evil but he was certainly busy. Not that he had been, even if he always liked to keep himself busy. The perk of being a shapeshifter was that he could be anyone, and with a few robberies and deals and subterfuges, enough money to do anything - including feed the impoverished, which really ought to not be a job done by so-called evil, what does that say about the rest of society?
He hadn’t been busy until recently. Law enforcement hadn’t been even a concern for him and heroes were general nuisances at their worst, until now, it seems. Crimson Void could certainly hold his own in battle. Janus thinks he could find this hero’s fighting to be admirable, but he was rather preoccupied worrying about the teenage twins who showed up at his soup kitchen, one always covered in bruises.
AKA Janus accidentally acquires two teenagers.

Virgil feels the narrative hold on his actions lightening, Thomas getting uncertain about where to go from here; he takes the opportunity to scramble to the side and onto a windowsill, noting with relief that the curtains on the inside are mostly closed.
There’s already noise inside. Virgil frowns- Thomas should not have made that scene that fast, Virgil didn’t even feel the story expand- and curls up on the windowsill, half-crouching, to try to peek through the crack between the curtains. A figure in white and red is pacing through the fanciest gold-plated bedroom Virgil has ever seen, decked in jewels and wearing them as casually as slap bracelets.
Virgil’s eyes narrow.

The answer should have been clear: his king preferred the sorcerer alive, obviously, since then he could be interrogated for information on the rebels. The royal torturers could dredge all they could out of his brain before he died- and then he would die, bound in nullifying chains and all alone, and it would be a mercy.
That was his king’s wish, so it was Roman’s as well. He should have been content with that, should have been a loyal soldier, oathbound as he’d been since childhood- should already have put his captive in chains to take him back-
But he couldn’t stop thinking about how the torturers might crush his glasses, or bash in that scholarly face, or break all of those ink-stained fingers.
He couldn’t stop seeing the blue splashed across the clearing.
