And it’s certainly not forcing Hermann to wait and suffer for a fucking month for the PPDC to deliver the cane that they should have given him fucking ages ago. That’s violation of equal rights, and really fucking ableist, and-
And who is Newt fucking kidding? He know firsthand that this place is shit at accommodations.
So if someone is going to do something about this, it’s going to have to be Newt himself.
So with Hermann leaving the lab early every night, not wanting to spend time in the same room as Newt and needing more time to sleep thanks to the extra energy that having to deal with the pain is taking, Newt has plenty of time in the lab to himself.
And so of course he does the only thing that would make sense: Newt stays up late to carve a cane out of kaiju exoskeleton and scale.
Y’know. As one does.
(Aka: an incident in the lab destroys Hermann's cane. Due to shipping issues, it will be weeks before Hermann gets a new one.
So Newt cuts out the middleman, carves him a new one out of kaiju exoskeleton, and then leaves it for him as a gift from a secret suitor. Because of course he does.)

Summary
Hermann accepted, a long time ago, that he was asexual, so there is no chance of becoming one of Newt's one-night-stands even if Newt was attracted to him, which Hermann can tell is very much not a possibility.
But maybe this is a good thing. He doesn’t have the chance to become a one-night over-and-done-with. He doesn’t have the chance to become Newt’s once-was rather than a what-if.
Sure, Hermann knows that the answer to "what if" is a "definitely not," but it can’t hurt a man to dream, right? To fantasize about what it would be like for Newt’s hand to cup his cheek, to cradle him close, to kiss him sweet. What it would be like to cuddle close with Newt, to be held at night, to know that he is loved-
But Hermann has to reassure himself, that greedy, aching organ in his chest, that it doesn’t matter who fills Newt’s bed for a night at a time, because none of those people ever last.
(In which Hermann has had a crush on Newt for ages, but he's convinced that Newt wouldn't want him back. Meanwhile, Newt's "anyone who will take me" mentality might be hiding a crush or two of his own.)

Summary
So, turns out that drifting with a kaiju with no one to help carry the neural load can cause some brain damage. Whouda thunk?
Other than the rather obvious seizure, Newt had thought that nothing was wrong. Or, at least, he’d been able to pretend that nothing was wrong, because he wasn’t really paying attention to himself and his own body when the entire world was on the line.
The adrenaline of meeting a black market kaiju dealer and nearly getting eaten up by Otachi and drifting with Hermann and needing to deliver the information they’d found to LOCCENT had carried Newt through much of the battle without him noticing any other lingering side effects.
But the moment that they finally stopped long enough to let the rest of the world filter in, as the Breach was closed, as Mako Mori and Raleigh Becket were confirmed as the last pilots left alive, he finally noticed the cold.
(After Newt drifts twice with a kaiju, he's left with damage to his brain that leaves him incapable of thermoregulating properly. Good thing that he has a drift partner that is more than willing to share his parka, right?)
