"What about me?" Yugamu asks brokenly.
A dark jealousy has been simmering under the surface of Yugamu's skin for weeks now, worsening with time. He should be content to be of any service Sumino desires. But he's not content at all. It's terrible, he's terrible, but he wants more. He doesn't want to be useful. He wants Sumino's love.
"What about you?" Sumino snaps.
If the others received rewards without even doing anything for Sumino, then shouldn't Yugamu, of all people— "I'll do it," he hears himself say. Sumino stops looking angry, his expression softening into relief. "But I want something from you first."
Takumi is tired of being a god, but Yugamu isn't ready to let him go.

Gregor feels stupid the instant he says it. Of course she didn't do that. Even though Ishmael had put the idea in his head, she hadn't been serious. Gregor's overreacting and making connections that aren't there.
Ryōshū shrugs. "He asked."

"Keep her busy!" Heathcliff shouts, steadying himself and hoisting his rifle up to a firing position.
"<No, don't shoot!>" shouts the clock-headed individual. Hong Lu risks looking away from the disoriented monster to throw a quick glance in Heathcliff's direction, and he finds his subordinate visibly hesitating—expression conflicted, fingers frozen in the process of reloading his rifle. Whatever power of compulsion is in play here, it's affecting them both.
But like hell is Hong Lu going to stand around and let that thing attack Heathcliff again.

Half an hour later, when the bus takes a sharp right turn, Heathcliff's body leans along with the force. His shoulder ends up pressed against Baoyu's arm, head following, falling limp against Baoyu's shoulders. Coarse dark hair tickles at Baoyu's neck. Baoyu glances down to make sure Heathcliff is secure enough that he won't slide forward and hurt himself, then looks back out at the passing scenery.
"Next time Clockhead leaves the room," Heathcliff mutters under his breath, which is the first indication Baoyu gets that he isn't asleep, "I'll nip in and nick my rifle."
Oh, dear.
Heathcliff gets stuck in a Mirror World ID. Hong Lu is not a very good babysitter.

Hong Lu cracks open his eyes and clearly tries to look at Heathcliff, but his gaze is distant and unfocused. When he exhales, it's uneven and burbling. Blood in his lungs, Heathcliff realises with alarm.
"Heathcliff," a woman's voice says, and startled, Heathcliff looks up. A white haired woman stands on the other side of Hong Lu. She looks down at them dispassionately. Something about her tickles a hazy memory, but Heathcliff doesn't know her. "Your emotional state is preventing the Mirror overlay from separating properly. You need to calm down."
Heathcliff doesn't know what that means, and he doesn't care. Doesn't she see that Hong Lu is dying? "I need to help him," he insists.

In short order and with a pained gasp, Heathcliff fails in his disobedience and collapses to the ground. It isn't so much a conscious choice as it is his legs giving out.
The next order comes a second after his knees hit the concrete. "Hands behind your back."
Fucking hell. Fucking hell. Heathcliff grits his teeth and tells himself he doesn't have to listen to this, but the irezumi starts to burn in warning. Slowly, the dull, throbbing pain spreads across the expanse of his skin, then begins to intensify. It's tolerable at first, like holding his hand over an open flame. It hurts, and his body instinctively wants to contort itself away from the pain, but Heathcliff holds firm.
"You're just making things harder on yourself," Hong Lu warns gently.
Heathcliff gets on the wrong side of a superior.

"I don't get off on mutilated bodies, you bloody wanker," Heathcliff interrupts, horrified and already self-consciously angling his body away from Hong Lu. "It's—" He sometimes gets like this after a job goes really well. He doesn't do anything about it, that would be weird, but it's just… a physical response to the adrenaline or some shit. But he can't explain any of that without sounding completely mental. "—none of your business."
"Yes, of course," Hong Lu says, the placating tone conveying what he isn't saying out loud: that he fully believes Heathcliff gets off on corpses but is graciously letting him save face.
Heathcliff and Hong Lu have a chat after a job.

It's fall of year 1, and Sebastian would like everyone to shut up about the gifts he's been getting from the new farmer.
