After being forced to flee his own office with half of his commanders taken into custody, the other half on the run, and his own men becoming subject to ludicrous orders, he's not so sure anymore.

    Roy leaves and the room gets a little colder, like Roy had been warming it with his very presence. That’s—normal. Everything chills once the sun dips out of sight. It’s to be expected.

    The cold is fine because the bed is still warm, the thick blankets of the nest trapping the heat. The bedroom door is open now—open because Roy walked out it. That’s fine too. He doesn’t need the meager protection it offered. He’s still the Red Hood, and a fully capable adult besides, even if he feels about as weak as a kitten right now.

    The cold is fine and the open, unprotected entrance is fine and everything is fine.

    ("Sokka," Zuko begins before he can change his mind. "Do you ever wish you didn't have to wake up in the morning?"

    Sokka looks at him in a strange way, and Zuko immediately regrets opening his mouth. The feeling is annoyingly familiar. He's spent the past half of this year saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, even when he's trying his best. Not that the twenty odd years before this have been any better.

    "Like I wish I didn't have to wake up because I wish I was dead?" Sokka asks, not taking his eyes off of Zuko, who's feeling like he has ten seconds to explain what he means before Sokka springs Katara on him again for mental healing.)

    The royal palace is a lonely place for a Firelord. Left in the Fire Nation, Zuko keeps (almost) getting assassinated left and right while the rest of his friends are out rebuilding the world. He isolates himself, avoiding the people closest to him (which really only consist of Mai and uncle), and throws himself into his work as he copes with being in charge of a nation in shambles.

    When Sokka arrives to join the council as Ambassador, Zuko feels like things just might look up for him.

    After all, a friend on the council can never be bad, right?
