Summary
Jay traces her steps back to the ponds after her talk with Lizzie. Her blanket is wrapped tightly around her shoulders, cutting out the cold. Every step feels like flames licking up her bad leg by this point in the day — especially after sparring, or trying to, with Lizzie — and she limps her way there, lip bitten in pain. There's tear tracks on her cheeks, leaving her face feeling tight.
She's tired, at least emotionally.
Before she knows it she's back in front of her sister's grave, ribbon flitting softly in the night breeze. It looks pretty.

Death in Lumière is almost calm. It’s slow, because it’s so inevitable. Dying young is not an outlandish fear as much as it is prophecy. It’s gruesome in its own right, yes, leaving people making decisions and having questions no one should really have to make. But petals are still quiet. Petals float away slowly, letting you grip on for at least a second or two longer.
Blood is only slow as it drips off your skin.

She watches him explode from the ice, like lightning in a bottle, a crackle of electricity, raw and untamed. Gone is the boy who'd turned up in a too-big jersey and didn't know which end of the stick was supposed to be on the ice. What she's seeing now is a different man entirely. Her heart does a weird flip flop as the Hala Crusaders scatter like marbles upon his approach. He's actually going to do it, she thinks. He's going to save us all.
But then he puts one skate in front of the other and trips up, arms flailing widely as he struggles to remain upright, before smacking his helmet onto the ice and floating along like a sad little turtle.
"Oh, shit!" She hears Walker stifle a laugh, and then there's a groan. Ava's probably punched him.
