“It’s…” Nami skims over the paragraphs. “…a love letter.”
She whispers the words as her eyes reread her declaration for the men who changed her life. For good.
“Not quite your usual taste in literature, I assume.” Nami chuckles softly.
“Indeed. But change is always welcome.”

"Nami, if I died tomorrow, I’m sure you’d all have feelings about it. But if you died? You know what would happen?"

"You wouldn't have to hide your good sake anymore?"

A breathy, pained chuckle escaped him. "Dammit, woman," he whispered. He moved his calloused thumb, gently wiping a tear that had escaped down her cheek. "You’re thinking of the battles where Luffy, Sanji, and I fight. But you know what I think about?"

    "What?"

"During those same battles, when brute force wasn’t enough... who rode in on a Waver with a plan?"

    ———

Nami gets washed overboard in a major storm and Zoro is hurt rescuing her. When the guilt eats at her, she comes to his bedside in the infirmary. Zoro, with a surprising sincerity, reminds her why he would risk everything to save her.

“Bravery feels like a curse sometimes,” she said quietly, staring at the horizon.

    “Yeah?”

“Yeah.” She bit her lip. “Bellemere was brave, and look where it got her.”

There was a long pause, filled only by the sound of the wind.

“You were brave,” Zoro said calmly, “and look where it got your village.”

“Psh, that wasn’t bravery. That was desperation.”

He hummed. “Can’t it be both?”

    ——-

Nami pressures Zoro into escorting her around a new island while she takes some notes for a new map. Their walk along the beach turns into a playful, prickly banter between the two. It evolves into sincere moments where they demonstrate how much they see and respect the other.

"Psh, at least let me buy you a drink," the man persisted.

"Only if you’re buying for my friend here as well," she said, jerking a thumb at Zoro.

The man sneered, looking Zoro up and down. "Boyfriend?"

"No," Nami sighed. "Just an enormous pain in my ass."

    Zoro snorted into his beer.

"Perhaps you might let me rescue you from his company, then,"

“Tempting, but I have already committed to ruining his evening.”

    ——-

Nami’s hope for a quiet night is ruined when Zoro catches her on a "walk of shame," sparking a relentless wave of teasing. While Nami is distracted by her need to get the last word in with Zoro, a disgruntled creep at the bar catches her off guard, leading to an eventual violent confrontation.

How about you remove your hand from my ass," she replied, her voice turning ice-cold.

The man laughed, looking back at his friends at a nearby table. "Or what? You’re going to sick spinach-head over there on me?"

Zoro didn't even look over. "Trust me, she doesn’t need me to put a runt like you in your place."

    Summary

"How are you not afraid of Arlong?" she asked suddenly, her voice small.

"It’s not about fear," Zoro said, his gaze steady. "It’s about committing to a future and fighting for it. Everything else that would stop you—it’s just noise."

Nami let out a sharp, watery huff. "Psh. You’re such a damn swordsman. ‘Just turn off your brain and stab your problems away’” she mocked.

"Being a great swordsman isn't just about the way you swing a blade," he countered, leaning back slightly but keeping his eyes locked on hers. "It’s about knowing when to swing, and exactly who you’re pointing your steel at."

He arched an eyebrow at her, a challenge flickering in his eyes. "Actually, it’s something I’ve noticed you’re better at than me."

You're an idiot," she hissed, her hair falling forward to hide her face. "You just made things worse."

"Maybe…but I needed to see it.”

“See what, exactly? Your grave?” she spat as she finished untying his ankles.

Zoro crossed his legs and looked at her.

"I saw that those bastards still hadn’t managed to kill the part of you that actually gives a damn." he said, his eyes unwavering.
