“A minor setback, really,” the wizard said, waving off the dwarf’s concerns with a smile. He squeezed Bilbo’s shoulder before clearing his throat. “Young Master Baggins, here, is the son of one of the Shire’s most proficient Westron speakers. He was exposed to the language as a child, although he hasn’t had much use for it in his lifetime so his skills have, understandably, diminished. But I have no doubt that, given the opportunity to learn, he would pick it up quite quickly. He is a clever fellow if I’ve ever known one.”
(OR: Thorin needs a burglar, Bilbo needs a dictionary, and Gandalf needs a drink.)

Katara looks up at him from her sewing and gives him a look. It’s the same look he’s always gotten when he’s tried to get this information out of her. It’s a look of frustration and sadness and hurt. It is not a memory she has ever liked to reflect on, seeing her mother dead, and she doesn’t understand why her brother can’t let it go. She doesn’t understand why he keeps pushing her for this information years later.
“Don’t ask me things like that,” she says. “You should know it upsets me.”

It was a truth universally acknowledged to all within Erebor and its surrounding lands that Dwalin and Nori of Thorin’s Company could not stand the sight of each other. They fought and bickered each and every time their paths crossed like a feral cat and a baited dog.
But a truth slightly more obscured than that, lounging just to the left of what could be handily observed, was the notion that hate probably didn’t describe this at all.In which Thorin and Bilbo are hypocrites, Dwalin and Nori are oblivious, and the entire Company (plus Dís) are shipper trash.
Or: the most ill-advised romance Erebor has ever seen, featuring all the gratuitous little Austen-isms you have always craved in a Hobbit fic!

Bilbo Baggins is about to find out, when the consequences of a small mistake force him to realise that there are other threats and even greater forces of evil in Middle Earth beyond the calamity of Smaug. So it comes that, having barely finished his first adventure, he embarks on another journey that will put his endurance and strength of will to the test in a way he's never experienced before - and suffice it to say that a magic ring that possesses something of an own personality does not make for a good travelling companion.

Thorin has always been happy to see Bilbo adopt dwarfish ways, until it is pointed out to him that Bilbo, not actually being a dwarf, might be happier in their marriage if Thorin were to make a bit of effort to adopt some hobbitish ways in turn.Naturally, Thorin goes about this in a sensible and moderate manner.
