    Adam considered this for a beat. Then, idly, he swiped his finger under the tear on Ronan’s other cheek, brought it to his mouth, and licked it.

    Inside, they pretended they would dream, but they did not.

    “Do you like it?” Neil asks. His eyes are fixed on the sand where he’s drawing little swirls with a finger, a nervous tick Andrew has noticed. “I wrestled it out of a clam.”

    The thought of Neil stubbornly prying a shell open with his nose scrunched in concentration causes Andrew’s mouth to twitch upwards. “I suppose it’s alright,” Andrew says and he receives a dramatic eye roll in return for his blatant lie. “Yes, I like it. Thank you, Neil.”

    Neil keeps gifting Andrew different things he finds in the sea. Surely, it doesn't mean anything special.
