Roy knows way too much about her. She knows Jamie likes her eggs runny and her chips soggy. She knows Jamie’s entire workout plan and nutrition plan. She knows Jamie gets tears in her eyes from laughing while on the phone with her mum and cries angry tears after she hangs up with her dad. She knows when Jamie is sore physically and emotionally. She knows how to touch her to make her come like she’s being hit by a fucking train and how to pull her back from the edge. She knows when to listen to Jamie babble about her bizarre history podcasts and when she can tune out because Jamie is talking just to make noise. She knows what alcohol makes her giggly and what makes her spew, and she knows how Jamie likes to have her hair held back. She knows so much, and it’s a wonder she has room for anything else–and a bigger wonder that none of that knowledge has turned her off.

Sometimes they will go for weeks without speaking, tiptoeing passive-aggressively around one another until one of them—usually Griddle—breaks the layer of ice with a bowl of unseasoned rice or the rental of a classic horror film. And then the lid is placed back on the pressure cooker, and the waiting starts all over again.
It usually leads to blows. Sometimes it leads to other things. But it always ends the same way. Someone pulls away, someone tries for the wrong block in the tower, and everything comes clattering down with force.
