"Grace isn't an idiot. He knows Driver's past is muddy. He knows Driver can look after himself and has surely done terrible things to do it. Was probably taught terrible things from a very young age, while Grace's parents were teaching him how to build sand castles and swim.
But it's just a weekend. And Grace had asked once, weeks ago, if he still has to worry about the sorts of things Driver gets involved with, and Driver had told him no.
And Grace believed him.
Clearly, that was his first mistake."While Grace goes away for the weekend with Colt and Jody, Driver falls back into old habits. Grace is furious when he gets back — but failed to account for exactly how afraid Driver would be in the face of an angry man.

“Don’t want to what, buddy?”
There’s a suspiciously wet noise on the other side of the closet door.
This would be so much easier if Holland could have a smoke. But no—he’s done with that. He knows if he gets out his lighter right now, Ryland will never tell him anything.
Not that the kid’s saying anything anyway. He’s just crying on the other side of this stupid door, and all Holland can do is sit here and listen.
Holland March’s life has never been what one would call stable. But he’s doing his best and he’s making it work, and it isn’t perfect but it’s pretty damn close. Then social services calls, and within twenty-four hours he has two traumatized nephews on his doorstep and one in custody on charges of murdering March’s (estranged) twin brother.
Thrown into the deep-end, March struggles to confront this new reality. Who was his brother, really? What could have driven his nephew to such an abrupt act of violence? And, most importantly: why didn’t March see this coming?
