    It all started with that fucking sweater.
    Billie was happy for Samir. It'd been a while since he had an official girlfriend, and as far as she knew, he had never taken a trip with a girl before. This weekend upstate with Carly was big for Samir, and Billie was glad. Really, she was. 
    As she got ready for Issa’s Bring-Your-Billie-to-Work day that morning, she noticed him checking his suitcase a few times, crossed paths with him while he fussed with his hair in the bathroom mirror. Then, he finally emerged from his room in that white cable knit sweater that, for some reason, Billie could not stop staring at.
    On the walk to the dance school, Billie couldn’t stop herself from bringing it up to Issa.
    “It was a sweater, Billie,” Issa shrugged. “He looked like that guy in When Harry Met Sally.”
    “You mean Harry?”
    “Right, whatever.” Issa pulled open the glass door for Billie.
    It was, in fact, just a sweater. And Billie put it out of her head for the day. And for a while after that. Until one morning, a week or two later, when he rushed out of the house past her and left her in a cloud of his new cologne. She stood at the bottom of the staircase, a little dumbfounded. Fuck.​​​
