Pushing on their goggles, Tech sighed; TAY-0's HUD flashed a storage warning. "I suppose that will have to do," said Tech. "We can grab something more nutritious on our way to the ship."
"What's wrong with flatcakes?" Wrecker asked, scratching his head.
"Nothing, Wrecker," Tech said to their brother. "But growing children require more than gluten and complex sugars."
"What's so complex about it?"
"Nobody cares!" TAY-0 interrupted.

Summary
Two days after their first contact—and more importantly, their first words—Grace sets up his thinking machine to speak.
Rocky does not need the assistance of a machine for Grace’s language. It is ugly and harsh to listen to, but it’s relatively simple to learn. That, and, well—Rocky was alone for a very, very long time before he met Grace. He maybe hangs on to each word a little more than strictly necessary. Grace only needs to tell him each word once for Rocky to know it forever.

Summary
After the Taumoeba leak, after I decided to die after all and turned my ship around to save Rocky, after Rocky's frantic calculations about food supplies, Taumoeba multiplication rates, and human caloric intake needs, after we realized that with some rationing and luck I would make it, but that we were headed toward the unknown territory of trying to rapid-prototype me a life support system and synthetic food supply on an inhospitable planet: after all of that, after everything, I shouldn't have been surprised that it only took a few months on board the Hail Mary for things to get weird.
Edit: I made some minor continuity and grammar edits on 6/20, this is the final version!

Summary
Before the launch of the Hail Mary, Ryland Grace had a totally normal reaction to being asked to participate in a threesome. He didn't freak out at all. He was super cool and dignified about it, actually.
Years later, on the journey to Erid, remembering this event leads to some interesting discussions with Rocky.
