To be clear, Ilya is grateful the rookies aren’t growing up the way he did in the NHL. Ilya took the hazing to the chin – humiliation rituals, beat downs, grueling practices to prove he could “hang” with the big guns on the team.
That being said, there’s still some part of Ilya that balks at the request by the gaggle of rookies to watch The Iron Giant, a veritable children’s movie at the team’s latest movie night.

Summary
The truth was he didn’t care that he’d lost rookie of the year, not really. Sure if he had lost it to the twerp from Minnesota he might have felt slighted, but Shane Hollander was the MLH good boy. Ilya had long since gotten over losing these fanciful awards to Hollander.
At least Hollander’s parents got to see him win, parading around with him and his trophy with a level of pride that Ilya had known nobody ever felt for him.
Fuck he needed a cigarette.
