it’s the hope that keeps me coming back to you

Summary:

Jean set down her pen. “Sorry, Klee brought how many explosives?”

Venti shrugged. “This land has survived an awful lot of flattening. It can survive a bit more.” He, nearly alone, still remembered the mountains. “Ah—but in the spirit of helpfulness, I should add that she’s testing a rather potent mix, if you know what I mean. It might be less ‘flattening’ and more ‘cratering.’ The lake can always stand to be deeper, but, well—“

He didn’t have to finish. Jean had taken off halfway through, far more focused on containing Klee than on deferring to Venti, which was wonderful improvement.

Chapter Text

Jean knew Diluc was Darknight Hero-ing, which was awfully convenient for every other vigilante in Mondstat. If they slipped up and left traces of their presence, it could be blissfully blamed on Diluc.

Still, it was awkward to bump into each other at night. Rosaria and Diluc usually swapped a few prickled sentences at best, and Kaeya and Diluc exchanged only rude gestures and crisp hand signals that coordinated them better than trained knights. Rosalia and Kaeya got along fine, but both were on full, paranoid alert at night, so they mostly avoided each other for the sake of their nerves. Diluc had turned around and walked out the one time the three of them discovered, mid-heist, that they all hunted the same target. Kaeya hadn’t let it go for weeks.

The only consistent teamup was the Darknight Hero supervising Diona’s midnight attempts at gathering ingredients. No one disturbed that pairing; Diona learning the Darknight Hero’s identity could either break the teamwork or start a Diluc-Diona mission to destroy the wine industry for good.

That, in fact, was why Kaeya and Rosalia spoke a bit tonight. A late-night explosion in the alchemists’ quarters had drawn them both here, leading to a war council amid frozen, cracked, and bubbling potions. Diluc had actually shown up a few minutes in; Kaeya had actually spoken to him. But just briefly. “Klee,” he ground out, legs braced against the corner of the wall for leverage as he forced aside another slab of rubble. Diluc rolled his eyes, rolled his shoulders, and left; Kaeya and Rosalia gave him a good two minute headstart before resuming the conversation.

“If Diluc and Diona ever start getting along like you described, the only thing we can do is get Diluc to start acting parental,” Kaeya muttered, kicking aside what used to be a table. “He tends to adopt small children. Always has. It should offend Diona enough to break the partnership.”

Rosalia grunted, nodded, and refrained from mentioning why Kaeya knew this. Kaeya refrained from snarking at her measuring look. Midnight was, after all, a time to value silences.
