Summary
The kid with blood pouring down his shins is not so far from the dog lonely enough that he thinks breaking his housetraining is worth it for the ten minutes of berating that come with it, the ten minutes of undivided, if reluctant, attention.
Buck thinks, sometimes, that at least he wasn’t the kind of puppy that gets put in a sack and drowned at birth. He wasn’t always unwanted. And he isn’t anymore.
or, evan “i love you like a dog” buckley has only ever known how to love like, well, a dog, but maybe eddie diaz is the kinda guy to give a flea-bitten mongrel a forever home

He doesn’t know at what point he falls asleep, but it must be before Eddie, because when he wakes later, the bedside light is off and Eddie’s wrestled himself out of one blanket to drape it over Buck.
Buck finds all six foot two of himself curled at the bottom of the bed, tucked in by Eddie’s feet. He unfurls his body now, limbs aching uncomfortably from being tightly folded for so long. When he sits up, he dislodges Eddie’s hand, and it falls to the mattress with the softest muffled sound. Falls from where it was resting, casual as anything, on the back of Buck’s neck, he realises belatedly.
He feels hot in a way that has nothing to do with the blanket and Eddie’s body heat. Something about the picture they must’ve made, the position he fell asleep in, protecting and protected in turn. There’s a rush of rightness with the realisation that this is where he always wants to be, every night he’s ever ducked his head through Eddie’s doorway to check on him blossoming from this primeval instinct to just—be near. Keep guard.
He considers just curling back up right here, letting this feeling warm him to sleep. Or even, maybe, sliding in beside Eddie, enough space and normalcy for plausible deniability. He’s allowed on the bed, after all. Eddie said so himself.
