"Hey, Rubes, is she still doing it?"
Ruby turned her head toward Yang with a look of utter despair. "Yes! What is it with people from Atlas?!"
"Are we sure it's not just a rich people thing?" Nora queried as she slipped beside Ruby to peek.
"Pretty sure that's just about everyone from Atlas," Yang said pointedly.
"Guys," Blake groaned exasperatedly. "It's not that big a deal."
Yang, Ruby and Nora all gestured dramatically toward the scene of the crime. After watching for a few seconds, Blake had to concede. "Well, it does look a bit pretentious."
"Exactly!" Nora said a bit too loudly.
Of course, Weiss heard that. And noticed the others. And then she huffed.
Weiss Schnee was a woman of culture. It was a point of pride that she had carried to Beacon. While she was hardly perfect - and would claim she was still leagues better than most everyone else - she liked to believe she had a certain elegance that her classmates generally lacked. Their uncouth manners were a bit annoying at times, and Weiss knew that none of them would ever make it through a dinner party in Atlas. The fact that she sooner preferred not to rush back home was beside the point. It was her duty as a Schnee, an heiress to her name and her grandfather's company that she carry herself with the utmost elegance.
The crime she was being accused of by her uncultured friends and teammates?
Eating a doughnut with a knife and fork.
It was a simple doughnut, a round ring of fried dough coated in sugar, nothing near as absurd as some of the confections Weiss had spotted in the shop. She had been taking the afternoon to wander around Vale with her girlfriend and take their minds off of their studies for a while. It was surprising to hear Pyrrha suggest the donut shop - stranger to see it spelled that way - but something deep inside of Weiss prompted her to go inside and look around. The smell of sugar and dough being fried filled the colorful shop, and the display cases featured an astonishing array of sickly sweet treats, none of which could possibly be good for one's constitution.
But the longer Weiss looked around, the more her stomach began to rumble and she let her curiosity and her hunger get the better of her. She also realized that she was quite literally treating herself to the sort of thing she never got to enjoy at home growing up. The idea of being taken to such a shop and having such a thing as a doughnut was absurd given the small army of cooks and butlers at her family's command back in Atlas, not to mention her upbringing caused her to look down upon such cheap frivolities.
Until she sat at the small table just outside the shop, with her single plain doughnut on her plate, a couple of napkins neatly placed beside it, and a knife and fork in hand. She cut a piece as carefully as she could, inspected the warm doughy substance, and took a bite.
Weiss didn't exactly love it at first bite. The sugar made her think of Ruby's "cream and five sugars" coffee habit, and the taste of the fried dough left her imagining Nora inhaling ungodly amounts of this stuff. Nevertheless, she kept eating. And after another bite or two, Weiss had to admit, it was pretty good.
But then, she noticed the spies across the street and the way they seemed to mock her for eating with utensils like some pretentious brat. Weiss huffed and set her knife and fork down, having suddenly lost her appetite and leaving less than half a doughnut on her plate.
Pyrrha had been silently watching with a tender smile, but when she saw that they had an audience and how it was getting to her girlfriend, she shook her head. Suddenly, she got an idea. Without a word, Pyrrha got up and went back inside.
In that time, Yang, Ruby, Nora and Blake approached the pouting heiress who looked like she was contemplating whether to stab them with the knife or the fork or both.
"What's so funny?" Weiss demanded.
"Just you, princess," Yang replied without missing a beat.
"Yang," Blake chastised halfheartedly, her smile betraying her amusement at Weiss's current suffering.
"Well at least I have some dignity!"
"Weiss, people don't usually eat donuts like that," Ruby pointed out, being genuinely innocent in her remark. Not that Weiss took it that way.
"Then they eat them wrong."
Nora cocked her head to the side with her eyebrow raised. "Sheesh, do they teach you how to ruin fun in Atlas?"
Weiss huffed again. "HOW DARE-"
"I'm back!" Pyrrha announced in her usual, fairly cheery voice. But Weiss knew her well enough by now to know that it was meant as a way to put an end to the conversation, if one could call it that. Everyone looked at Pyrrha as she sat back down in her seat with a doughnut of her own, along with another set of utensils and a few napkins. Then, without further ado, she stuck her fork in the glazed doughnut and began to cut with her knife.
"Sorry, I decided that I was a bit hungry after all," Pyrrha explained before popping the first piece in her mouth.
The four onlookers watched Pyrrha, then looked at each other. Weiss was just watching her girlfriend, slowly processing what was going on.
Ruby leaned closer to Yang and whispered, "I think Weiss is rubbing off on her."
It wasn't quiet enough as Pyrrha immediately responded, "I think it's sweet of Weiss to do this. And sensible." Cutting another piece, Pyrrha went on, "Doughnuts can be rather messy, after all."
As much as Nora or Yang wanted to point out that the mess was part of the fun, neither said a word as Pyrrha held out her fork expectantly. Weiss looked shocked at first, then slowly leaned closer and opened her mouth, feeling a bit foolish. Until the extra sweet bite of Pyrrha's doughnut met her tongue and she let out a small hum of contentment.
It didn't beat the feeling of her girlfriend beaming at her like there was no one else around.
So it was only fair that Weiss cut another piece of her unfinished doughnut and offer it in return. If anything was said about the sudden display of mushy romance, neither heard nor cared. Just Weiss and Pyrrha enjoying their doughnuts as elegantly as they pleased.
