The Return of a Prince

Summary:

Legend looked down at the contract in his hands with a neutral expression. He saw Fable shift nervously in front of him from behind her desk. Legend had already made his choice, in fact, he’d done so long ago after much thinking, but he was always one for dramatics.

Work Text:

To Legend it didn’t mean much at all, but to Fable, it was like Hylia came down herself to make this possible. Legend had no idea what possessed him to accept Fable’s proposal, maybe it was her pleading look that seemed forty times more powerful than usual, or her pushing him to his limit over and over again.

In the end, something happened because now he sat behind closed curtains, waiting dreadfully for his sister to finish her speech towards the kingdom. If you would have asked Legend from about a month ago, he would have laughed at your face and told you to keep dreaming, but right now, Legend was stuck between running or facing his crowning ceremony.

Fable had told Legend all about how she didn’t want love and how she didn’t like people in that way so she would never produce a heir for the throne. So in all her wisdom and greatness, she had thought of the second best option, her big brother who had gone ‘missing’ long ago and the kingdom had no idea about and who was married to a wonderful husband and wife and had an actual chance at having children.

Legend’s leg bounced with enough speed and force that he was sure that it could be heard over Fable’s voice. Really he never meant to become the king after Fable’s death, because such a responsibility would just take too much out of him.

Fable had promised that just because he was older didn’t mean he would become the king, first he’d be taught with the royal tutors, have private lessons with Fable, et cetera. Even once he’d completed the work, Fable would still be queen and Legend would only turn king once Fable died and if the heir was too young to rule.

The veteran hero didn’t mind the arrangement considering he could now rub it in front of the guards who had wronged him that they couldn’t do anything to him. Despite the inconvenience that came with the fact that he’d now be known across the kingdom as ‘The lost prince’ or ‘ The prince who was once lost but is now found’ or something along those lines. It also generally meant that he couldn’t parade around town with the Chain looking for ingredients and potions or weapons for Wild.

Fable promised that she’d get some of her most trusted guards and spies to safe keep his house, but since no one other than Fable, Ravio,  Marin and the Chain knew where his house was it shouldn’t be a big problem. (Ignoring possible assassins and/or journalists.)

“And with that out of the way, I would like to present to you, my beloved kingdom, the lost prince from 19 years ago, Link.” With deep breaths, he opened the flowy curtains that had been blocking Legend and the kingdom from each other for the past 10 minutes or so.

There were screams and hushed conversations erupted from the crowd as he made his way towards his designated seat next to his sister. While walking he spotted the team of heroes he’d been traveling with to see them sitting front row.

He could make out some of the faces they were making, like how Warriors was most definitely smirking, the bastard, Sky looked dazed, like he found out Legend was Fable’s sister all over again. Wind was yelling, hopping up and down excitedly next to a perfectly neutral Four. Hyrule was definitely smiling so widely that Legend almost winced with how much Hyrule’s cheeks would hurt later.

That was all he could really make out seeing as the people had been set a specific distance away so that if any assassins were to throw something like a knife at any of the royals, the guards would have time to act and Legend of Fable could jump right out of the way.

Legend was tempted to give Warriors a middle finger but decided to stay professional and simply sat next to Fable. It took a bit before the crowd was silent enough for Legend to most likely be able to hear his own voice before Fable continued, standing from her throne with wide movements.

“My people, I have been waiting for a long time for when my brother would inevitably return to us, and that time is now over. The Hero of Hyrule, now known as the Hero of Legends, Link has returned.” Fable announced, looking like nothing could ever go wrong.

The people yelled out once again and for once in Legend’s life, he had something to look forward to, a future he could look after and say ‘I made this happen.’. And truth be told, he really was proud of it, because, no matter how painful it was to get to this point, seeing the people he had protected with his life ever since he’d turned nine(9) encourage him, really was something he wouldn’t change for the world.

Now if only Warriors could stop smirking at him so his life could be perfect again.
