Hyrule kept talking about the Hero of Legend to the Chain, but everything he knew had not really survived the test of time, so he had a lot of misunderstandings and wrong information around the legends. When later Legend joined, everyone were really surprised when he, in fact, did not have a wife, was not the ‘kind, loving and always happy’ hero (he was traumatized, give him a break), and was not the Queen's consort. That's his sister; ew.

If she really could see the truth, she would see the pathetic little weak boy you really are. You can't save anyone, you let everyone around you die because of your incompetence.”
Link could hear the venom in the surprisingly young and feminine voice. He felt a hand in his hair, but couldn't think much of it before it grabbed a handful of his hair and forced his head up to look in the eyes of the knight in front of him. He tried to put on a mask of indifference to hide his terror, but it didn't seem to do much.
“Oh, is the little Hero scared?”

The whole Chain was tired after days of fighting. Legend has a bad time when his past takes form in a nightmare.

Princess Zelda sighed, stood, and rounded her desk to place a gentle hand on Legend's shoulder. “Because he's embarrassed.”

“You are,” Zelda corrected him. “You hate the idea of anyone knowing the truth about you, and you're scared to death that one day someone's going to let the entire country know, and you won't be able to escape it anymore.”
Legend crossed his arms and looked away, clearly unhappy, but didn't argue further.
“If he don’t want to tell us that bad,” Twilight began cautiously, “you don’t gotta -”
“Oh, yes, he does.” Princess Zelda gave Legend’s shoulder a squeeze. “He’ll have to get used to the idea eventually.”
Or: Legend has a secret. Fable is very tired of helping him keep it.
