Ice Skating Away From Your Problems

Summary:

Draco leaves the Wizarding World after his fourth year, shortly after Viktor Nikiforov is accepted as a student under Yakov.

When Draco left he never thought he would go back, content to live his life as Viktor with Yuuri by his side.

Notes:

Just a little drabble a wrote a few years ago. Editing doesn't exist. Maybe one day I'll actually write this out but for now it's basically just a bunch of flashes through Viktor's life. Enjoy!

Work Text:

The only time that Draco ever felt free was on the ice. While he skated it was the only time that he wasn’t Draco Malfoy, the Pureblood heir, he was simply Draco. He was able to express himself in ways that had been previously impossible. He won competition after competition because of his love for the ice. The solidarity of the cool rink, it was his safe place.

Going to Hogwarts was both a relief and disappointment, it took him away from the ice, but it also separated him from his parents. He had to hide who he was even at Hogwarts when all he wanted was the freedom of the ice.

Everything changed when he went home after his fourth year. He was expected to become like his father. The silver-haired heir ran away that night. He couldn’t do this anymore, he couldn’t pretend in that way, he didn’t want to be trapped. He snapped his wand left the Malfoy name.

Draco Malfoy was only 14 years old when he died. Viktor Nikiforov appeared in Russia the same day and later became a student of Yakov Feltsman. The little boy with bright blue eyes and silver hair had changed himself, mentally taking everything that was Draco Malfoy, the pureblood heir, and placing him in a box. Allowing himself to shine as Viktor, the skater that would become a legend.

Viktor held Yuuri in his arms in their large apartment in Petersburg. The smaller man was fast asleep on the silver-haired man. It was amazing how far the Japanese man had grown, Viktor was in awe. He loved Yuuri more than he loves the ice, something he didn’t know was possible. But it brought up a new problem. The blue-eyed skater knew that he needed to tell his significant other that he was a wizard.

How was he supposed to tell the man that magic exists? How do the professors do this for the muggle-borns?

His body tensed. What was he supposed to do? He wanted to tell Yuuri, to have the man know every single part of him, and that meant telling him about Draco Malfoy. Everything was just too complicated.

“Vitya, whatever it is you are thinking about, you can tell me, you know that, right?” Yuuri asked softly, shocking the elder

“Yuuri! I didn’t know that you were awake.” The man tried to smile but failed

The Japanese man frowned and sat up placing a hand on Viktor’s face, “Viktor. Just tell me. We will work through this together. You aren’t alone anymore.”

“I… I know. I just don’t know how to…” The man with silver hair stumbled, looking into his lover’s eyes, “I want to tell you so badly, but I…”

“It’s okay, just say it.”

“I… uh, magic exists?”

“... okay. Wasn’t expecting that.” Yuuri admitted, “Anything else?”

Viktor’s eyes widened, “You aren’t mad? You’re not freaking out?”

“I’ll freak out later, for now, let’s focus on you.”

“Alright… I, uh, I’m a wizard? I went to school for it until I ran away and changed my nam-”

“Wait. Stop. You changed your name? From what? Why?” The man asked cautiously

The blue-eyed man gave a soft sigh, “I will explain from the beginning, but don’t interrupt me, I don’t know if I will be able to get through all of this if you do.” With a nod from Yuuri, he continued, “I was born as Draco Lucius Malfoy in France. The Malfoy family is one that comes from a long line of Wizards and Witches. In it, I was taught that all those without magic are less than me, that I was better. My family moved to England shortly after my birth, my father supported an evil man, called Vo-Voldemort that wanted to kill all those without magic and those that come from those lines, often called half-bloods.” Viktor rambled, “I was a little over a year old when the first war ended and V-Voldemort was killed. I grew up skating but had to stop when I went to school at eleven. After my fourth year, V-Vold-Voldemort came back. My father was pushing me farther into becoming like him, and I just…. I couldn’t do it, Yuuri.” Tears started to pool in his eyes, “They were going to ask me to do something horrible, I-I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t even think about killing someone. S-so I left. Snapping my wand, changing my name, eventually returning to skating.”

Yuuri pulled him into a tight hug, Viktor cried. He hadn’t told anyone until Yuuri came along. No one knew that he and Draco Malfoy were the same people. It hurt so much. He had left everything that he had ever known and no one ever knew.

The couple stayed together until Viktor’s tears finally stopped, his eyes puffy and red, a wave of exhaustion rushed over him. Yuuri spoke softly, “Thank you for telling me, Viktor.”

“I should be thanking you.”

“For what?”

“For listening and not thinking I am crazy.”

Yuuri shrugged with a small smile, “I might have seen you ‘cleaning the apartment’ from the couch. I knew you would tell me eventually, whether you had telepathic abilities, or had magic, or anything, I told myself that I love you. No matter what.”

“Really? You really love me?”

“Of course I do. I love you.”

Viktor couldn’t help but smile, “I love you too.”

“This is a stupid idea. Why am I doing this?” Viktor asked as he paced outside of the leaky cauldron

Yuuri stopped him gently, pulling him close, “You are doing this to get an update about the war. We are doing it now because we are already in England for the Grand Prix. I am by your side, we are doing this together.”

“Okay. Yeah. We can do this.” The man tried to encourage himself and slipped out of Yuuri’s arms and grabbed the smaller’s hand tightly

He walked into the pub and walked right up to Tom who looked like he had seen a ghost, “Excuse, sir, can you open the wall,” Viktor winked playfully, “I broke my wand and… you know?”

“Uh, y-yes. Yes. Of course. Follow me.” The man seemed thrown, but he guided the couple to the back and tapped the wall open for them

The silver-haired man gave the owner a full press sparkle smile, “Thank you!”

As the couple walked along the cobblestone path, Viktor could see Yuuri looking around at everything. He couldn’t help but smile as he watched his partner gaze with wide eyes. He had forgotten how good and light magic could feel. For so much of his life, he just remembered the cold and heavy feeling that he associated with life before skating.

“Is it everything you expected?” Viktor asked teasingly

The Japanese man only nodded, too awed for words. The older couldn’t stop looking at his beautiful and stunning partner. He was so lucky to have Yuuri in his life. His grip on the raven’s hand tightened. He loved this man.

They walked through the streets. Viktor heard a soft tune coming from one of the stores and he was hit with nostalgia. He couldn’t help but laugh as he pulled Yuuri faster along to the music, as a kid he always wanted to dance in the streets. Draco Malfoy never could, Viktor Nikiforov didn’t have that type of impulse control.

He happily spun the man around and began to dance. Yuuri immediately followed, allowing Viktor to lead him through the moves. The two moved in unison, moving elegantly to the soft tune. They drew the eyes of all those that passed, especially when Yuuri dipped Viktor. The silver-haired man kept falling deeper in love with the man. Their movements were fluid and seamless, even as he easily lifted Yuuri up into a spin. Both men laughed openly as they danced without a care.

As the song ended, there was a loud applause causing the men to jump, not realizing that they had gathered a crowd. Both immediately smiled and bowed, thanking the crowd. Yuuri blushed brightly at the attention. The crowd slowly dispersed, both skaters sighed in relief.

“That was fun,” Viktor stated

“You seem a lot better than earlier.”

The older skater gave the shorter a soft smile, “I feel better, thank you, Yuuri.”

“Anything for you.” Yuuri smiled back at him

A voice chocked behind them before an airy voice forced its way out, “Malfoy?”

Viktor froze, it had been so long since anyone had ever called him that. It felt weird. He slowly turned with Yuuri to the voice, to see Harry freaking Potter with three small children by him, the youngest on his hip, one holding his hand, and the tallest little boy standing next to them. It is obvious that they are his children.

“Yes, Potter?” Viktor questioned

“You’re alive?” The man looks so confused and lost at the same time

Viktor nodded, it made sense that everyone thought he was dead, it was the point so that they wouldn’t go looking for him. He was not expecting the man to put down his young daughter and rushed him into a hug. Viktor laughed nervously letting go of Yuuri and patted the man’s back.

After several moments Viktor felt a pair of little arms hug his leg, “uh, not that this isn’t weird, but, uh, why are you hugging me?”

“Is that a Russian accent?” Potter asked as he pulled away allowing the silver-haired man to look down and see the little girl Potter was holding earlier attached to his leg

Instead of answering the man, he squatted down and smiled at the girl, “And what is your name?”

“... Li’y…” The girl patted her eyes shyly

“What a beautiful name for a beautiful lady.” The girl giggled and hugged his leg tighter, “My name is Viktor, but my name used to be Draco Malfoy.”

“Okay! I like you!”

“Thank you!”

“Why did Daddy hug you?”

Viktor hummed playfully sending a wink up to Potter, “Because we haven’t seen each other in a really long time.”

“Daddy miss you?”

“Maybe. You would have to ask him.” the skater directed softly

The little girl nodded, letting his leg go and turning to her father, “Daddy miss him?”

Harry looked Viktor straight in the eye, “Yes, I did. How about we invite him over for dinner?”

“Sorry, we have to be ba-”

“Viktor,” Yuuri interrupted, “You should go.”

“But, What about….?”

“I’ll be fine for one night, besides, we have to go back to Petersburg right after the competition. You should go.”

“Yuuri…” The man whined

Potter chuckled, “I hadn’t realized that you two were together, we would love to have both of you over.”

Viktor turned to Yuuri silently asking if he wanted to go, the man sighed and turned to Potter, “We would love to. I’m Yuuri Katsuki, I’m his fiance.”

“I’m Harry Potter, I could open the floo for you or…?”

Viktor winced, “I no longer have access to a wand and I don’t have access to a floo, the muggle way would be preferable.”

The man-who-lived looked surprised but nodded, “Alright, we could meet up at your hotel and I can take you both? We live rather far out.”

“That would be fine.” Viktor smiled

“What am I supposed to wear? You said the wizards wear robes?” Yuuri asked

Viktor hummed, “Potter’s a half-blood so we can just wear what we normally do.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes, now relax, Yuuri. I have to figure out how to tell the kid I used to bully about my life since running away. We could bring your posters!”

“No.”

“What did you mean by competition? I didn’t hear anything about quidditch?”

“Honestly Potter. Do you think I survived this long by being a wizard? No. I am an ice skater.”

“Like… muggle ice skating?”

“Yup. I was the best until my fiance came along.”

“You know, you should come, we are both competing tomorrow!” Yuuri suggested with a small smile

“Ginny.”

“Harry.”

“Did… Did I just watch…”

“You did.”

“That was Draco Malfoy.”

“Yup.”

“That git can skate.”

“That we can agree on.”

“Ron. It wasn’t a dream. I met Draco Malfoy after he danced in the street with his muggle fiance. And then he came over for dinner. I think Lily loves him more than she loves me.”

“Sure, mate.”

“It happened! Then I watched him ice skate!”

“I think we need a quick trip to Saint Mungo’s.”

“Yuuri says I have to invite you,” Viktor grumbled

“To what?”

“Our wedding.”

“You guys finally doing that?”

“Yes. Can you help me tell my mother that I am alive? Yuuri threatened not to cook tonight if I didn’t attempt to ask her.”

“Is that why we are invited?”

“Maybe. And Lily wants to be a flower girl with Yura.”

“Aw. So I am just extra baggage.”

“Yes. And the human shield.”
