Chapter Text
Peter is so thankful for Karen in his ear.
Peter was very hesitant on saying he came from this League of Assassins but he definitely didn't want to out himself as Spider-Man. Plus he gets free training. Peter was sort of hoping Dick would win the argument because Dick is a trusted vigilante but learning from a crime lord is cool as well.
Peter is eighty percent sure the crime lord won't shoot him once they are alone. This is not what he expected to happen when entering a new universe. Jason said he died or should be dead but Peter is not sure he should trust Jason's word. Peter did notice that Jason had the same white streak in his hair as him so he must be experienced in either dying or multidimensional travel. Peter isn't sure about the whole dying thing.
Sure it felt like he was dying when he was sent to this universe but did he actually die? Peter's not sure but Jason's been through the same thing and clearly knows more about the subject. So Peter was going to learn everything he could from Jason. Even though Jason is a crime lord. Peter's conflicted on the whole crime lord thing as well. From what Karen told him he's not a totally bad guy. So maybe he can trust Jason? At least for now. He can probably just leave if Jason tries to make him kill people.
Peter thought about asking Jason if he was from a different universe but decided he should probably ask if he died first.
"So, did you die?" Peter asked as they arrived at Jason's apartment.
"Yes, I died and was brought back like you." Jason answered and Peter nodded.
"It is said the Lazarus Pits have the ability to heal any injury or bring back the dead." Karen informed him.
"Wait, I actually died? Like really died?" Peter asked in surprise. Jason stared at him.
"You didn't know!?" Jason yelled at him in confusion.
"It was a strange process." Peter said glaring at him.
"Okay, take a step back. You don't remember dying?" Jason asked and Peter went silent.
Does he remember dying? The spell Strange did on him did hurt a lot but he doesn't remember dying. Unless the pain he went through counted as dying? And maybe drowning a bunch of times?
"Sort of?" Peter said in confusion.
"Do you even know what the pits do to your psyche?" Jason asked him.
Peter knew this one! Karen told him earlier!
"It makes you go insane for a bit and angry." Peter answered happily.
"Do you remember anything that happened before you died?" Jason asked and Peter hesitated.
Yes, he remembers clearly what happened before he died. Should he tell Jason though? It would be easier to just lie and say he doesn't remember.
"Not really." Peter answered quietly.
"Let's figure out how much you remember." Jason said getting into a fighting stance.
Jason wants to fight him again? He wasn't mentally prepared to fight right now. That's what he gets for following a crime lord to his apartment.
Peter sighed and copied the stance.
How should he play this?
Peter dodged Red Hood as he started attacking him.
He doesn't want to come off as weak but he doesn't want to seem too strong either.
Peter starts off with some light punches. Red Hood dodges most of them. Peter nods as he comes to the decision to go easy on Red Hood and let him win after a few minutes. Red Hood is an amazing fighter and Peter matches him blow for blow. Peter lets himself slip up though and lets Red Hood get the upper hand.
Peter has learned from experience but he also taught himself the best way to immobilize an enemy quickly through Youtube videos and practice. Peter has learned to listen to his spider sense and dodge any threat. Peter is used to using his webs sure but he is just as effective when his webs run out.
Red Hood pins him and to be honest Peter barely feels it. He's been knocked through buildings before. He's had a warehouse dropped on him before and an actual moon. Screw you Thanos.
Peter taps out and Red Hood lets him up.
"You stopped fighting me." Red Hood said and Peter tensed.
"Uh, yeah. That usually happens when you tap out." Peter said, chuckling nervously.
"No, you let me win." Jason accused.
"And why would I do that?" Peter asked defensively.
"Did you really get kicked out?" Red Hood asked and Peter sighed.
Peter figured out being kicked out of the League of Assassins would never usually happen. Most likely he would be killed instead. He could say he escaped.
"I ran away." Peter said testing the waters.
"Why?" Jason asked him and Peter gulped.
Strange wanted him to send the villains away, back to their universes where they would die. That's as good of an excuse as any and he's pretty sure the League of Assassins are evil.
"I didn't want to kill them." Peter said cautiously.
"Who didn't you want to kill?" Jason asked and Peter took a deep breath to calm his rising panic.
What were they? Villains? No, they were victims. They didn't deserve to die. But how does he apply that information to this universe?
"People with powers are called metas in this universe." Karen informed him, giving him an out.
"Metas. They didn't choose to be like that but he wanted me to kill them." Peter said remembering how cold Strange was about the whole thing.
"Did you save them?" Jason asked intrigued.
"No, they died anyway." Peter said pretty sure sending them back killed them.
It was either that or the end of the multiverse.
"I'm sorry." Jason said and Peter shrugged off his sympathy.
"I think you should train with Robin." Jason said and Peter looked at him in confusion.
"Robin, a mantle passed down from each of Bruce Wayne's wards. The current holder is Damian Wayne. The blood child of Bruce Wayne and currently 11 years of age." Karen informed him quickly.
Jason wants him to be trained by a child?
"Why?" Peter asked curiously.
"He trained under Ra's as well. Fighting me clearly won't help you but you could train with him." Jason suggested.
"Why do I need training?" Peter asked, for the first time questioning why these vigilantes want to train him.
"Because you want to be a vigilante?" Jason sounded so unsure of himself Peter couldn't believe he was being serious.
"You want me to be a vigilante?" Peter asked in confusion.
"Well, no I just... don't want you to kill anyone." Jason said and Peter nodded.
"Yeah, I gathered that." Peter said and Jason stared at him.
"You do want to become a vigilante, right?" Jason asked and Peter went quiet.
Is this a good idea? It's not like there's any threat in just being Peter and a vigilante. Peter doesn't even have to call himself Spider-Man. He still plans on going out as Spider-Man but maybe he can have another alternative identity. As long as Jason and the other bats don't find out he's Spider-Man he thinks he'll be okay.
"Yes. I do." Peter nodded and Jason smiled.
"Great, do you have a costume?" Jason asked him. Peter shook his head.
He's not letting any of the bats think he's Spider-Man.
"Okay, let's work on that first and we can figure out a name for yourself later." Jason said and Peter smiled.
This might actually be fun!
Jason worked on a new costume for him. Peter noticed it consisting of a lot of kevlar and things to protect him. Peter was glad to experiment with the materials Jason had and make a new name for himself.
"What about Vulture?" Jason suggested a name for his new vigilante name and Peter flinched back.
"No, absolutely not." Peter said, shaking his head.
He doesn't want to be called by the name of his old enemy.
"How about Hawk-"
"No, I'm not being Hawkeye." Peter refused immediately.
"Hawkeye? That's a cool name but I was just going to say Hawks." Jason said and Peter rolled his eyes.
"No." Peter shook his head.
"What about Falcon?" Jason suggested.
"No, why are you trying to make me a bird?" Peter asked and Jason shrugged.
"Birds are cool." Jason said and Peter thought about that.
"Might I suggest the Passerine Sparrow?" Karen suggested and Peter smiled.
"Passerine Sparrow." Peter said, thinking upon it.
"That's cool." Jason said and Peter nodded.
"I like it." Peter said glad he found a new name for himself.
"What are your colors, Passerine Sparrow?" Jason asked Peter.
"How about gold and green?" Peter asked, thinking of Loki.
"Green? What are you, a supervillain?" Jason asked in question.
"Yeah, nevermind." Peter said, reminded of Quinten Beck.
"How about gold and black?" Jason suggested. Peter thought about it and smiled.
"Yeah. Gold and black. Should I have a sparrow symbol on my suit?" Peter asked, looking at the bat symbol on Jason's suit.
"Sure!" Jason said and helped him finish designing his suit. They finished the costume together and Peter got it on.
It was more of a suit of armor than the skin tight suit Peter is used to. It doesn't have any technology built into it but doesn't limit his ability to move freely.
"This mask isn't very secure." Peter pointed out as it was only held on by a strap. It wasn't very good at blocking out input either. Peter was wearing something so rushed together he didn't think he could actually call it a costume.
"Not yet but we can work on improving it later." Jason said and handed him a grappling hook.
Did Jason intend to take him out as a vigilante right now?
"Do you know how to use one of these?" Jason asked and Peter shook his head looking at it in interest.
"Let me teach you." Jason said and Peter looked at him in surprise.
Apparently the answer was yes.
"Just watch what I do and repeat it. This is the trigger, this button retracts it. You'll do great." Jason patted him on the back then grappled the nearest building and took off.
Peter is a little stunned that Jason is using the grappling hook like Peter uses his webs.
"Are you sure this is safe?" Peter asked a little worried about the property damage the grappling hook might inflict.
"Yeah, come on! Why don't you try!" Jason said from the rooftop he landed on. Peter hesitantly shot the grappling hook and almost tripped at the unexpected backlash. Peter yelped as he clicked the button and he was brought into the air.
Peter didn't know how to stop himself from going to the building instead of swinging forward so he dropped the grappling hook and clumsily landed beside Red Hood.
"Not bad for your first try. I'll go retrieve it and we can try again." Jason said and Peter nodded glad Jason didn't judge too harshly on his grappling skills.
Being a vigilante without using his powers was strange but thrilling. It was learning a whole new skillset on how to travel from the rooftops and Peter enjoyed it. Maybe this universe isn't as bad as he thought.
