Simply the best

Summary:

James gives his heart away too fast—first to Lily, now to Regulus. Because love should be all or nothing, should be the thing you fight for. And Regulus—Regulus who writes lyrics like confessions, a poet stitched into a rockstar’s body, is everything he’s ever wanted. But Regulus doesn’t want James’s heart, and James thinks it might just ruin him.

Evan knows what ruin looks like. Fuck, he’s practically an expert in it. He’s spent years watching it unfold between his two best friends. His own heart caught in the wreckage of Barty and Regulus’s half-hidden, half-holy, and entirely doomed love story. And still, he wants it. Wants be to be fucking wrecked. Wants the kind of love songs are written about, more than that wants to be chosen, to be fought for but unfortunately for him the person he wants doesn’t want him back and so he’s left picking up the pieces of a disastrous love story that isn’t even his.

Notes:

CW: smoking, recreational drug use, and underage drinking. Very slight elusion to eating disorders, lot of swearing, heavy Scottish accents, and questionable use of French.

I unequivocally reject J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans views and stand in full solidarity with the queer community in support of all LGBTQA+ rights. Furthermore I fully support the boycotting of the Harry Potter franchise and any and all associated (mainstream) media that financially benefits JK Rowling in any way.

Thank you to Alyssa for being my cheer-reader on this, and for being willing to dive into a fandom you don't usually read for.

Chapter 1: Prologue: Call Me Tonight.

Chapter Text

You've got static in your veins—I can hear it crack,
Your record collection brings dead songs back.
Say my name like a matchstick—strike it up, watch it burn.
I don’t care what you call me, just call me back.

I call you past midnight, voice richer than sin,
I’ll be your next mistake, your clean slate, your win.
If you ask I’ll give you my heart—
Let you tear it apart like modern art.

I don’t care what you call me, just call me tonight.
Let me haunt your lungs like a Marlboro Light.
I’m the last mistake you make twice,
Come on, baby—let me be your vice.

You play at love like you don’t want to win,
Too scared to be wanted, too stubborn to give in.
You wreck my name like it’s just another game,
But I don’t care, whatever you’ll give I’ll take it all the same.

I don’t care what you call me, just call me tonight.
Say it like a secret, hold it tight.
Make it hurt, I’ll still beg for more—
I’ll give you the kingdom, just open the door.

I’ll choke on you like a prayer on my knees,
Say it like a curse—make you believe.
Need you, like I need to breathe.
Tell you I miss you—you whisper it back,
But I want more, something filthy and French—a fade to black.

So light me up or let me die.
I’ll give you my all just say it won’t mean goodbye.
You can be my ruin, I’ll be your release.
The one you never deny.

Cause I don’t care what you call me, just call me tonight.
Say it right, like a sin, like a fight.
I don’t care what you call me—
Just call me tonight.
