Regulus Black has three goals for his "ideal college experience": get his Journalism Degree, try ice skating again, and reconnect with his brother after two years apart. He wouldn't mind making a couple new friends along the way as well. He will do all of this, of course, while also working a part-time job, participating in the figure skating club, and writing for the school paper, "The Amherst Student."
Little does he know that his already tight schedule will become even more packed when said school newspaper assigns him to cover the UMass Amherst ice hockey team. The ice hockey team that Sirius Black, and his hot best friend, James Potter, are on.
Let's just say Regulus' college experience is going to be a bit different than he imagined.

The year is 1991. Regulus Black, an orphan apparently uncannily similar to the father he never knew, has been raised alone at 12 Grimmauld Place. He has two friends from two different worlds: Regulus' cousin, Draco Malfoy, and James Finley, the muggle boy with hazel eyes and incorrigible bravery who lives down the road and is the only reason Regulus has seen the world that exists outside of stifling pureblood society.
James, like Regulus, never knew his true parents. James, like Regulus, has strangely vivid dreams that sometimes seem as if they're trying to tell him something. And when his eleventh summer rolls around, it's revealed that James, like Regulus, is magic after all, and bound for Hogwarts come September.
Regulus knows he should be excited to have his friend join him at Hogwarts. Instead, he's frantic with the sense that magic will be James' undoing. And as he and James progress through their first year at Hogwarts, the magical world seems hellbent on proving Regulus right.

Orion glanced up, amusement already forming. “Like when we were kids?”
She smiled thinly. “Something like that. Only properly this time. A points system. You’ll be black. I’ll be green.”
“And what are we counting?”
“The children’s favourite.”
He actually stepped back. “What?”
“In one week Sirius leaves for Hogwarts,” she said briskly. “That week decides it. Whoever has the most diamonds wins.”
“And the loser?” Orion asked, because there was always one.
Walburga’s pause was deliberate. Dangerous.“The first ten disasters Sirius causes at Hogwarts—fires, pranks, headmaster meetings—you handle them personally.”
“Ten?” he winced.
“To be fair,” she added sweetly, “Regulus counts too.”
Orion laughed, low and incredulous. “You do realise this is exactly what we promised we wouldn’t do.”
“That,” Walburga replied, extending her hand, “was before we had children.”
He took it without hesitation. “Deal.”
The diamonds stirred, magic sealing the wager.
They had sworn not to repeat the cycle.

This fic is a Jegulus rewrite that’s very heavily inspired by Before Us — ik the original is orphaned, but still gotta give credit where credit’s due.
Regulus ends up as James Potter’s college roommate, which is already a nightmare, and then he realizes James also comes with a baby. A literal baby.
Between late-night bottle disasters, Rosie falling asleep on him, and James accidentally being soft, Regulus starts getting attached in all the wrong ways.
Meanwhile, Mulciber seems charming until he isn’t, and Regulus finds himself stuck in something he keeps trying to convince himself is normal.
Slow burn, messy emotions, bad decisions, and Jegulus pretending they don’t care (until they really, really do). -

It took me a long moment to realize that Barty was checking in on me in a sort of backhanded kind of way, but I sort of didn’t care. His laid back demeanor, the way he acted as if nothing mattered, but he went out of his way to care anyway- it was suffocating and addicting and all things ruinous.
“You and Regulus always fight, and it’s annoying. You stomped off, and I think he’s mad at me, too. Only, I’m not sure what I did,” I was very aware of the fact that I sounded like a resentful and whiny child.
