Summary
Mallory Mayfield has a tattoo on her right shoulder blade: two roses growing from the same thorny stem. It’s a symbol of her and her little sister Max, growing together, defending themselves from a world that would rather cut them down than let them thrive.
Max idolizes her sister, but Mallory wishes she would aim higher. She isn't the greatest example; her grades are average/poor, she swears like a sailor, and she’s been repeatedly told that she has an ‘attitude problem,’ due to her stubbornness and refusal to let men control her or Max. This puts her at constant odds with her stepbrother, Billy Hargrove, who blames her for uprooting his life and loves nothing more than control.
Billy and Mallory’s battles have always been brutal, but this time, Mallory is dangerously outmatched, because Billy has figured out her greatest weakness: she will do anything to keep Max safe.
