Chapter Text

-Uhm we have a problem., said Trent with a frown.

-What?, asked Enid, now looking at him and the safe.

-The safe doesn’t seem to have any power left. Look. It usually shows when you type in numbers but the screen won’t even light up., explained the boy.

-Fucking hell., sighed Sam, shaking her head.

-Where does your uncle keep his stuff for his scientist work?, asked Enid, looking around.

-It’s in the garage., said the boy.

-Lead the way. Sam, stay here., replied Enid.

Trent nodded and walked out with the blonde, making his way down to the garage. He then motioned a closed closet with a lock and chain. Enid rolled her eyes and grabbed her gun, hitting the lock with it and breaking it open. She then opened the closet, looking at all the different kinds of chemicals. She smirked as she saw the numerous kinds of acids, including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, and nitric acid.

-One of these has to work., said Enid with a nod.

She grabbed the bottles and then walked back to the office with Trent.

-Okay, step back., said the blonde as she opened a bottle.

-What are you doing?, frowned Sam.

-This sulfuric acid will make the plastic around the keypad melt. We’ll be able to open it manually then., explained Enid with a shrug.

-And you know that, how?, asked her friend.

-You don’t want to know., replied Enid as she carefully poured the acid on the keypad.

-Yeah, I figured., nodded Sam.

Enid just watched as the acid ate through the keypad and took out her knife, forcing the safe to open. And somehow, it worked. Enid stepped back and let Trent carefully place everything inside of his backpack, including the numerous files and the box with the vials and syringes.

-Okay, let’s get moving., said Enid with a nod.

-It’s 1am. We should spend the night here., replied Sam with a frown.

-Fine. Okay. But I’m gonna let Wednesday know through the radio., nodded the blonde.

Enid walked out and made her way to the car. She turned on the radio.

-Willa? It’s me. Are you there? Over., said the blonde, waiting patiently.

No response.

-Wednesday?, tried Enid again.

No response.

-Hello? Are you there? Over., continued the blonde.

-Enid?, said a voice over the radio.

-Willa, hey. You’re awake., chuckled Enid.

-I can’t sleep so I just stayed by the radio.,replied Wednesday.

-We’re going to spend the night here, okay? We’ll be back in the morning., explained the blonde.

-Is it safe?, asked Wednesday.

-This street seems to be deserted. So yes., replied Enid.

-Just stay together. Stay in one room., said the younger girl.

-We will. We’ll be okay., nodded the blonde.

-Good. I love you., said Wednesday.

-I love you too. Goodnight, Willa., smiled Enid.

-Goodnight, Enid., replied the younger girl.

Enid quickly turned the radio off and went back into the house. She made her way upstairs and found Trent and Sam in a bedroom. She pulled out her sleeping bag and placed it on the floor, getting in it.

-We wake up at 6am. Get some rest. Sleep well., said Enid seriously.

-Yeah yeah., nodded Sam.

-If you hear anything at night, you say so. Trent, sleep with your backpack against you., continued the blonde.

-I’ll be hugging it through the entire night., nodded the boy.

-Good. Goodnight now., said Enid with a sigh.

And so they went to sleep. By some miracle, nothing happened throughout the night. Though Enid did hear some noise, looking out the window and watching a little group of 5 deers walking around the street. Looks like nature was starting to take over the small town. Enid watched as her watch hit 6am, instantly getting up and putting away her sleeping bag.

-Alright, wake up you two., said the blonde loud enough to make both of them jump up.

-Jesus- E, not cool., complained Sam.

-Yeah, you could have done that differently., nodded the boy, his hand on his chest.

-Check your backpack, Trent., said Enid.

The boy nodded and looked inside his backpack, still seeing everything as he had left it.

-All good., confirmed the boy.

-Alright. Then let’s head out., nodded Enid, grabbing her backpack.

-I’m sleeping in the back., said Sam as she yawned.

Enid rolled her eyes at that and walked out. She exited the house and walked up to their car. She started it and waited for the other two to get in. Once everyone was in and Trent backpack was secure, Enid drove off.

-How about you look at those files and read what’s in it? Maybe it could help us recreate the antidote., said Enid, as she noticed the boy getting bored and picking on the skin of his fingertips.

He nodded and took out a few sheets of paper, starting to read through it. Enid kept her eyes on the road, wanting to make sure that they’d get home safe and in one piece, or else Wednesday would kill her. How is it possible that she was only gone for one day and she already missed that girl this much? Who would have known that she would find the love of her life due to an apocalypse.

-Enid, you need to hear this., sighed Trent.

-What? What is it?, asked Enid, being brought back to reality.

-It says and I quote: ‘A virus that attacks the brain and triggers the person’s aggression is being produced as we speak. Highly contagious. Test subject lost all sense of humanity. Zombie-like. I have found the antidote. We will be giving it to soldiers and we will be the only country in the world with a functional army.’ And then later on it says that he felt guilty and wanted the antidote to be accessible for everyone. Not only the army. That is probably why they made him vanish. Or killed him., said the boy as he read from a page.

-So they created the virus. And then asked your uncle to create an antidote. Why would the government do this? This is like a biological war against every single human on this planet. It’s a war crime, among other things. I can’t believe they’d be this stupid and selfish., sighed Enid, shaking her head.

-I bet they kept the antidote for important people, like the rich folks of our country., said Trent with disgust in his voice.

-Probably, yeah., nodded the blonde.

-If we are able to recreate this antidote, I want to give it out to be people., said Trent firmly.

-How?, frowned Enid.

-We would start off small. We would drop a box with a few in places where we know people are hiding and living. Then, we would also try to heal those who are already infected. I want to do this. You don’t have to. But this is what I was meant to do. For my uncle., nodded the boy.

-We will help you. But this is only possible if we know how to recreate the antidote., said the blonde.

-I will continue reading through the files until we get home. I’m sure it’s written somewhere., replied Trent as he grabbed another page.

Enid nodded and focused back on driving.
