Summary
Neil jerked awake and reached under his pillow for a gun that wasn’t there. Instead, he met Andrew’s hand, and that slipped away from his fingers in an instant.
The door was open. A soft light flooded in from the hallway, and someone padded over to the bed. Neil was alert at once, but when he blinked to adjust to the new lighting, and found that it wasn’t a stranger come to attack him in the night, he relaxed, even if only a little. It was Renee, and she was making for Andrew, who was already awake and sitting up. Neil followed suit and listened as Renee said, quietly, “Can I have the car key? Jean’s in trouble, I have to go get him.”
Neil’s heart thumped loud in his ears as he watched Andrew flick his fingers to the key where it sat on the bedside table and lay back down. He watched Renee thank Andrew and grab the key. Before she turned to leave the room, Neil found his voice. “Renee,” he said. She looked over at him, curious he’d spoken up. “Get Eloise, too. Riko will kill her if she’s the only one left.” Renee hesitated a moment, and then nodded.
And then she was gone.
