The door opens, then latches shut almost just as quickly. Jeremy digs the heels of his palms so hard against his eyes he sees stars.
“Not now,” Jeremy chokes out. He feels so ugly and small, he wants to throw himself in the closet just to avoid eyes on him.
“I can’t do that,” Jean murmurs. “We are partners.”
Your pain is my pain, that’s the implicit message. Jeremy is here, hurting on Jean’s behalf, so Jean is here to wrap him back together. A neat little mirror.

Summary
Neil jerked awake and reached under his pillow for a gun that wasn’t there. Instead, he met Andrew’s hand, and that slipped away from his fingers in an instant.
The door was open. A soft light flooded in from the hallway, and someone padded over to the bed. Neil was alert at once, but when he blinked to adjust to the new lighting, and found that it wasn’t a stranger come to attack him in the night, he relaxed, even if only a little. It was Renee, and she was making for Andrew, who was already awake and sitting up. Neil followed suit and listened as Renee said, quietly, “Can I have the car key? Jean’s in trouble, I have to go get him.”
Neil’s heart thumped loud in his ears as he watched Andrew flick his fingers to the key where it sat on the bedside table and lay back down. He watched Renee thank Andrew and grab the key. Before she turned to leave the room, Neil found his voice. “Renee,” he said. She looked over at him, curious he’d spoken up. “Get Eloise, too. Riko will kill her if she’s the only one left.” Renee hesitated a moment, and then nodded.

He felt Jean tense against him. "What are you sorry for, Jeremy?"
“If I was a girl, you could be dancing inside, in the ballroom with everyone else,” Jeremy said miserably, hiding his face in Jean's neck like the coward that he was.
"Jeremy." Jean's hand left his waist, and then he felt a finger tuck under his chin, tilting his face back up until their eyes were level.
"If not with you, I would not be dancing in the first place," Jean told him sternly, "I am exactly where I want to be.”
Jean is an amazing dancer, and Jeremy just wishes he could dance with him.
