This work is a translation of the german original by an author who might be proficient at English but not enough so to write a story in it. At least not a good one. Please have mercy.

Harry's toes meet the edge of a white line, an old stripe of paint marking the lot, faded but not vanished from view. "I don't want to be out here." The immense stature of his partner is nothing compared to the placid blue waves. He sees the hundreds of ways a man can die in deep water. Smashed on a rocky shoreline, sucked under by a ravenous current, carried out to sea to be devoured by sharks. "I don't like water, Jim."
He blurts the words of this privileged secret he has carried for so long. Saying it aloud feels surreal, an admission of some great guilt.
Jim beckons Harry with the same limb that, a few hours ago, he used to lean upon him. The words men don't say to one another: You can rely on me. I can carry your weight, no matter what form it takes. Jim's face is softened by fondness. "I know, Harry."
Detective Harry Gates has a fear of water. It's up to his partner Jim McClain to figure out why.
