    Summary

She doesn’t feel her legs as they lift her from her seat and lead her to the stage because it was her name that was just announced to the district.

It was her death that was just announced.

She hardly hears her brothers screaming but she knows that they are. She knows that they’re terrified.

Winslet is bereft, trying not to cry but probably failing. The past two months, she’s been searching for a sign that her mother’s still with her, a signal that she’s still meant to be an undertaker despite her new discomfort with the subject matter.

This is the exact opposite of that. As much as Winslet misses Mother, she’s never once thought about joining her in an early grave. She doesn’t want to die; she knows this with conviction. But people aren’t meant to kill other people, especially not people like her.

After the unexpected death of her mother, there is very little that Winslet Elowen is certain of. For example, how is a mortician like herself supposed to win the 96th Hunger Games while keeping her hands clean?
